SNEERCHOMPER
Dampened from the previous night’s thunderstorm, a public road stretched through an area of deciduous woodland. Fair-weather cumulus clouds hovered in the deep blue sky.
A small cobblestone bridge spanned over a gentle flowing watercourse known as Murky Creek. Near the bridge, at the roadside, stood a sign informing motorists of a public park a mile ahead.
From down the road, a car slowed as it approached and traveled over the bridge. A few feet past the stone structure, the vehicle pulled onto the side of the road and parked. The engine shut off.
In the driver’s seat, Zack Peers, mid thirties, was in the process of impatiently trying to undo his seatbelt which was giving him a difficult time. What’s wrong with this thing,
he grumbled.
In the passenger’s seat, Tobi Peers, mid thirties, glanced at the road sign regarding the park nearby. There’s a park a mile up the road. Can’t you hold it?
If I hold it much longer, I’m going to flood the interior of this car,
Zack said. After a few moments, he finally got the seatbelt undone. He looked around, checking for any vehicles. I’m going under the bridge to whiz.
Watch out for trolls,
Tobi said.
Yeah, right. Let me know if you see any vehicles coming,
Zack said.
Why?
Tobi said.
Public urinating, that’s why,
Zack said.
What public,
Tobi said as she gazed around. There were no buildings or people anywhere in sight.
Just let me know if you see any vehicles coming,
Zack said as he started to get out of the car.
Wait,
Tobi said.
Zack could barely pause due to his urgent need to relieve himself. Hurry what is it?
What do I say if somebody stops?
Tobi said.
I don’t know. Tell them you stopped to take pictures of the creek,
Zack said. He got out of the car, closed the door and spoke to Tobi through the open window as he started down the small grassy incline, leading to the creek. I’ll be back in a few minutes.
Tobi nodded while remaining in the passenger’s seat. She gazed back at the creek below.
From the incline, Zack approached the creekside and stopped to look around.
The creek was about fifteen feet in width. Near the shore where it was shallow, the water was translucent. Further out where it got deeper, the water was dark, allowing for no visibility.
Zack gawked under the shady bridge, checking to see if anything was under there. Afterward, he stepped beneath the structure to relieve himself of a full bladder.
While waiting in the car, Tobi took her half empty bottle of soda from a cup holder, unscrewed the cap and took a drink. A displeased look came over her face, the soda having gone flat. She replaced the cap and started to put the bottle back into the holder. Tobi stopped and grinned as an idea came to mind.
Under the bridge, Zack was in the process of urinating. Suddenly, there was a splash of water, nearby. Startled, he spun around to look.
Drifting on the creek’s surface out in the daylight, near the bridge, was the soda bottle Tobi was holding moments ago.
Irritated, Zack scoffed. Litterbug!
His voice echoed beneath the small structure. Seconds later, Zack realized he was urinating on his shoes, having been distracted by the splash. Ahh!
In the passenger’s seat, Tobi chuckled. She happened to glance in the side view mirror, seeing a vehicle approaching from down the road. She leaned toward the open driver’s side window and spoke out. A car’s coming.
Really?
Zack said as he stood underneath the bridge, fastening his belt.
Yep,
Tobi replied out the window.
Let me know when it’s gone.
He waited a moment for Tobi to respond, but she did not. Did you hear me?
I heard you!
she finally replied, sounding slightly irritated.
Zack listened. He could hear the vehicle approaching the bridge from down the road. He remained beneath the bridge, waiting for it to pass by.
Something in the creek, below the surface in the deeper murky area watched Zack as he stood under the bridge, near the creekside.
Zack sighed, anxious as he continued waiting for the vehicle to travel by. He was unaware something in the creek was watching him.
In the passenger’s seat, Tobi waited for the vehicle to travel by.
From down the road, the car approached and slowed a bit. The driver glanced at Tobi has he traveled by.
Tobi watched as the vehicle drove onward. Once the car was a good enough distance up the road, she spoke out the window. It’s gone now.
A moment later, Zack’s echoing voice replied from beneath the bridge.
Tobi leaned back in her seat. She exhaled, flapping her lips.
At the creekside, Zack stepped out into daylight from the shadows below the bridge. He approached
