Julie slowed her car as she peered into the near whiteout conditions that had descended on the road just minutes before. Her knuckles were white and both hands ached from the tight grip she kept on the steering wheel. The road seemed to narrow and her vision was restricted to a tunnel that extended straight out in front of the car. Gusts of wind rocked the car and she murmured a silent prayer.
The expected wintry mix of light rain and snow had unexpectedly changed to snow as the temperature dropped. When the wind shifted from the southwest to the northwest, it brought frigid temperatures and heavy snow off Lake Superior and into Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Julie spared a quick glance at the car’s dashboard and saw the speedometer registered barely twenty miles per hour.
Damn!
she exclaimed aloud. I’m never going to get home.
She resisted the temptation to speed up and kept the accelerator steady. Heat poured from the floor vents and dashboard defroster vents. The temperature had dropped quickly and she had progressively turned up the heater until it was at the highest setting.
Julie had left her boyfriend’s apartment two hours earlier. Normally a ninety minute drive, she had first encountered a detour, then the weather had quickly deteriorated from not so nice to very bad. The terrible road conditions served only to fuel her anger at her suddenly ex-boyfriend Kyle, who had told her that afternoon their relationship was over.
She had made plans to spend the weekend with him at his apartment and had driven nearly ninety miles to be with him. Her plans had changed abruptly when Kyle ended their relationship just moments after she arrived. He
