A whale of a tale
It’s a windy, stormy day in Cape Town in November 2008 when two girlfriends and I set off for a much-anticipated hike on the Whale Trail. It has been raining for a few days and I’m a fair-weather driver in a small Renault Clio (named after my favourite Roald Dahl character – Matilda) so I find the muddy dirt road after Bredasdorp challenging. Fifty kilometres later, we make it to the parking lot at De Hoop Nature Reserve.
The next morning, when we’re supposed to start our hike, it’s still raining. So my friends and I walk over to the camp manager’s house. Not even two minutes outside and we’re soaked through.
