    CHAPTER 1

    360’ Global Kingdom Leadership

    Coaching & Margin

    Values & Margin

T he question has been asked, What values must change to create margin? This is a very good question and those who are experiencing margin less lives can individually answer it. In general, people must value balance in life and not have to keep up with the Jones as Swenson (2004) puts it. Swenson (2010) suggests that there is balance in the universe and how God made it and people should have balance in their lives (p.54). Swenson (2010) goes on to challenge people to either return to equilibrium or else establish a new level of equilibrium which smacks of creativity, innovation, and long-term commitment (p.59). In addition, Swenson (1998) blasts the notion that we must relentlessly pursue activity every waking minute is fatally flawed and drives people to grossly imbalanced lives (p.35). I believe these principles can apply not only on a personal level but also on an organizational level when it comes to the job expectation and job performance. Employees must be given realistic workloads and at the same time be given Realistic timeframes to complete the work. This highlights the need for coaching managers to evaluate how balanced the employee workload is and not just drive them to a point of exhaustion. Coaching managers can use these steps to success: identify the employee’s level of need for balance by asking appropriate and open-ended questions, and determine what are the specific balance needs and their relative importance and ask what you can do to help (Mackey & Tonkin, 2005, p.272). In summary, I believe the value that must change to create margin is for individuals and organizations to begin to highlight balance both at home and work.

Managing the Speed of the Soul

I agree wholeheartedly that it is vital that leaders manage the speed of their soul. I believe there are deliberate ways that leaders can manage the speed of their souls and keep the ax sharp in their lives. First, leaders can accomplish this by simply living out of a full well which means to fill themselves with the word, prayer, and worship to the point that others only get the overflow of that and do not draw on energy that is reserved for family, friends, and God Almighty. Doing this will regulate the speed of life, keeps the ax sharp and does not allow others to dictate the pace the soul keeps. I believe that the leader should be the regulator of the speed of their life as they get direction from their life vision, the Holy Spirit, and their life plan. For example, I learned a great deal by doing a life plan that I completed a week ago. The life plan assisted me in discovering what is important to what and me I should schedule into my life through a practical weekly calendar. This calendar made my desires more realistic and brought them from good intentions to concrete deadlines and time oriented steps (Spears, 2010, p. 18). Second, I recommend Harkavy’s (2007) life plan for leaders to assist in deliberately managing the speed of their lives because it gives barriers or guardrails to the numerous time wasters and life drainers that can prod and harass leaders (p.57). These are some of the ways that leaders deliberately manage the speed of their souls and keep the ax sharp in their lives.

    Margin Assessment

I was scanning the web and found a questionnaire or exam that applies to the subject of margin or lack of margin in people’s lives. It is called The Jim and Cathy Burns Overload Syndrome Exam which is adapted from Swenson’s book called Margin. The exam questions are as follows:

    1. Have you stopped enjoying life because you’re too busy?

    2. Have you stopped developing new relationships?

    3. Are you exhausted most of the time?

    4. (If you’re married) Do you and your spouse have a regular date night?

    5. Do you have credit problems or a large load of debt?

    6. Are you getting enough sleep?

    7. Does your family have dinner together on a regular basis?

    8. Do you take a restful day off?

    9. Do you have regular family time together?

    10. Are your children showing signs of stress? (Home-Word, 2010, p.1).

This exam can be used to gather information about our clients in the beginning of a coaching relationship especially if they are asking for focused time working through overload or burnout. After your client answers these questions, they can debrief with you on how they were feeling, thinking, imagining when they were answering the questions. They can tell you if they were angry, sad, emotional, and stoic or excited to confront some of the issues that they are facing in their lives. This is when a coach can begin to ask questions about the steps that the client can take to answer positively to all of these questions. First, the client must learn what Philippians 4:12-13 says about being content:

"I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation . . . whether living in plenty or in want.
