CHAPTER 1

"Going Global: Key Principles
Leaders & Organizations Should
Keep in Mind as they Globalize"
I n an ever-expanding global environment, marketplace leaders are faced with many challenges. The growth of technology demands that marketplace leaders become global leaders. The chapter focuses on the adaptations leaders and organization needs to make as they go global. This chapter also discusses the potential barriers that they need to overcome and finally discusses how organizational leaders need to adjust to accommodate new ways of doing business in the global marketplace.
My Going Global Story
Global Inquisitiveness
I was given the name Ulf Hansson Von Spears (even though I am not Swedish, Norwegian or German but African American from the inner city) because my mother was an opera singer and instead of traveling she named me an international name to symbolize the future travel that I would do in her stead. Even with an international name, I have had to grow in my desire to become a global leader since my only view of leadership was local pastors and athletes. The biggest struggle was getting over the fact that the world was not just the inner city but millions of diverse communities throughout the world that thought, spoke and believed differently from me. Thus, I began my journey from local to national and national to a global mindset. I am currently moving from a national mindset to a global mindset which has been a great deal more challenging than I expected and in many cases has forced me to learn and relearn basic foundational beliefs about myself, faith, education and business. Black et al. (2000) calls this inquisitiveness which is the reason for success in global leadership. (p.42)
Global Literacy
According to Rosen et al (2000) a key principle concerning going global is global literacy. Global literacy is defined as a state of seeing, thinking, acting and mobilizing in culturally mindful ways… including personal, social, business and cultural.
(Rosen et al, 2000, p.50, 57) So, am I ready to go global? I have traveled to all 50 states within the U.S.A., Mexico, Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and Canada along with having an international name: Ulf Hansson Von Spears. In addition, I see myself as a person who is constantly taking into consideration the type of environment that I am creating in the workplace, home, community and abroad. I usually ask myself these questions: Is the environment that I am creating culturally sensitive to those around me and does everyone feels as though he can function at his highest potential or does the environment favor one culture over another? I am willing to learn any global language, code or ritual that will better assimilate me into another culture along with becoming literate socially and entrepreneurially. Does this make me ready to go global? No, but I am willing to increase my global literacy in conjunction with cultivating a heart for global leadership.
Global Leader in Training
Global leaders in training have numerous growth opportunities that are behind them and in front of them as they aspire to be global leaders. I believe that a great deal of my growth opportunities with other global cultures have been due to my impatience and lack of willingness to walk through the learning process. Rosen et al (2000) argues that in the United States, there is a short term horizon and constructive impatience runs in the blood. The Asian countries have a more long term horizon which makes citizens less restless about immediate change.
(p. 100) The world is bigger than my world
is a statement I always use when placed in a globally challenging situation. Dunelm (2008) says that Tebhel is the original word for world and has to do with produce, fertility, and it is the same word as globe or man’s material dwelling-place. Therefore, since Tebhel means globe, one can
