About this ebook

Every local church requires leaders. Many believers are given responsibility to lead but fail to sustain their leadership. Developing the people who lead is essential to building strong churches and demonstrating the kingdom message to those who do not know Christ. The non-public lifestyle of a leader is what vitally supports the public expression of his or her grace. Next Level Leadership Training’s primary focus is to develop the maturity in leaders that enables them to pass every test, become powerfully effective, and endure for a lifetime. Disciple-making, or developing maturity in believer-leaders, is what produces the loving, unified, powerful leadership team every church covets. Next Level Leadership Training provides a clear process of how to take believers and make them become world-changers, leaders who love deeply, speak boldly, serve faithfully, and consistently demonstrate the supernatural.

    This book is

dedicated to my dear wife, Merilee, who has loved and supported me, walked with me and added to me, through all the years of learning and teaching. It is dedicated to my children, along with her, who have contributed an immeasurable source of wisdom and encouragement and joy to me as a father. It is also dedicated to my spiritual fathers, Dick Iverson, Kevin Conner, and Bob Stricker who taught me and helped shape who I am today. Their legacy lives on, not only through me but through the contributions they have made to the development of leaders around the world. It is also dedicated to many sons and daughters in the gospel that God has privileged me with, that have taught me so much beyond their knowing. Special thanks to Michael Praverman for his tireless efforts in reading and editing the manuscript. Finally, it is a recognition that all that is good and eternal, is, as the Scripture says, …from Him, through Him, and to Him….— to Him be the glory. May any insight received from this text lead the leader into more of the Word and more of Him, for the Scripture says, "…in the volume of the book it is written of Me." (KJV emphasis mine).

    To the Teacher

Leadership is meant to be developed in the same way as children are to be matured through the training of their parents. These lessons are meant to be used as a basis for instruction and discussion and can be taken in any order that the teacher believes is best. Scripture references for all Bible passages, not quoted in full, in the lesson, are all given at the end of each lesson, for reference in the actual teaching of the lesson. The teacher, in preparation for teaching, would be well advised to look at all the Scriptures so as to capture the full message of the lesson.

Turning to the Scriptures and referring to them in the teaching process is vital, as it is the Word of God that the Holy Spirit places into the hearts of leaders in training. All Scripture references used are the New International Version (2011 Anglicised version) except where specifically stated otherwise.

There are some project or implementation tips given at the end of some of the lessons. These tips can help would-be leaders to more fully integrate, what they have come to understand, into their lives. As the teacher will be training leaders for the rest of his life, there is no hurry to get through the material. Plants that grow the fastest are often weak and unstable. Any lessons that include concepts that are unsuitable to a particular context can simply be accommodated by saying, in our context, we would do the following, rather than what the text states.

The lessons endeavour to focus on five primary areas of leadership development: character issues, practical issues, relational issues, theological foundations and principles of supernatural ministry. The goal of this course is two-fold: 1) to develop total life maturity in the men and women being trained and 2) to develop a culture of love, unity and power among the team of those being trained. As a leader, you will only have the team that is powerful, loving and unified, if you train them to be so. Go for it! The wisdom and enablement that was His, in making a team of leaders that turned the world upside down, is on you!

    Leadership is…

Many people think of leadership as simply a role one is asked to fill in the context of the local church. Such a concept is fraught with unforeseen dangers. Leadership is fundamentally, spiritual maturity. As we grow up into Christ in all things, we model character, lifestyle and functions that are consistent with that increasing maturity or spiritual development. I can inspire others to stretch out after God but their spiritual development (which includes taking up certain biblical tasks), is limited by my own spiritual development. Parents cannot reasonably expect their children to act more wisely or more maturely than they do. Many do not discover that leadership is more than a man with a message. The man becomes the message even as Christ, who is the Word, spoke the Word. Leaders are meant to be and to become, the message they trumpet.

This course is designed to focus on the nature of this spiritual development as it is defined in our personal, family, and corporate life. No matter your age or experience, you will always be a learner and growing into greater spiritual maturity like Paul, who near the end of his amazing life, aspired to know Him in even greater ways. Next level leadership is on the table for the rest of your life. To develop a role or function without the corresponding character and Spirit-development is a road to ruin. Many leaders have had awe-inspiring talents but didn’t last the course in integrity and honour. Let us set our hearts to follow Him, pursue Him, find Him, love Him and obey Him. Learning from the greatest leader and teacher of all time, we will lean into the One who draws us on and draws others on, through us. Paul said, …that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God. Col. 4:12 ESV.

Some leaders will, like the first disciples, leave their careers and take up leadership responsibility and receive financial compensation for it. Jesus called His disciples. It is reasonable to believe that He still does so. Gal. 1:1. Whether the time and circumstances are such that a leader is to leave his or her career and take up leadership, in such a quantity of time, that it necessitates getting paid for it, is not the fundamental issue. Every genuine leader is one who has heard or sensed the call to become a fisher of men by responding to the discipline of training. Becoming what He said He would make them, is a process that is more than instruction, although it includes instruction. Whether you came into leadership responsibility because you came forward and asked for something to do or you were asked to do a certain task, you will inevitably have to recognise that it is God that has called you to serve Him. When and if you do, you will also see that it is His calling that must be supreme in your life. Using His wisdom, you can integrate everything else He requires, to fulfil His mission for your life.

Saying Yes! to the call of God on your life is far more consequential than you realise. It is an adventure of faith, full of exciting challenges, and glorious privilege. Once you have said, Yes to the Master, He takes you forward in relationship, training and service fruitfulness beyond what you could ever dream. Leaders get tired, frustrated, upset, de-motivated and feel uninspired at times. If they submit to those feelings and make decisions on the basis of those feelings, they will drift away from what they have acquired. Sometimes they even drift away from God entirely. God is always leading His people to take up a mandate outside of themselves that is impossible. Only He can sustain and enable what He has designed for each leader. Your leadership will find the greatest level of your endurance and motivation and then call you beyond it. Only then, do you stretch to become a greater expression of the capacity that He in His wisdom has placed within you.

There are two great entities that God is passionate about: His Church and His Kingdom. These lessons are designed to help the leader grow in his partnership with Christ in building His Church and in demonstrating His Kingdom.

John 15:16 NLT says, "You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name."

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and most important command." Matt 22:37-38 NCV.

Do your best in the job you received from the Master. Do your very best. Col 4:17 TMV

See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord. Col. 4:17 NIV

    The Leader and…..

    Economic Oppression, Deliverance & Promotion

    Introduction

In this 21st century, one of Satan’s strategies is to oppress God’s people in various ways…especially in financial terms. He wants to extract the very life and spirit of the believer so that they end up barely surviving and struggling to even survive. Believers, God’s covenant people, can sometimes unwittingly submit to the oppression of our time and of the earth-cursed system of this world. Ex. 5:1-19; Judg. 6:2-6; Num. 10:9; Deut. 26:7; Judg. 2:18 NLT; 2 Sam. 7:10-11; Ps.10:17, 18 NASU.

Leaders are meant to be clay in The Potter’s hands, not soft clay in the ‘hands of the Egyptian system’ (the Devil) and pushed into his mould.

Lamentations 5:6 says, We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. Luke 12:25-31. Often leaders are so caught up internally and time-wise in trying to simply ‘make a living’ and pay bills, they have few resources left to give to their families and their church family and their Kingdom mission. They have genuine desire to serve, but lack in the time, resources and energy to do what they would otherwise do gladly. Their lives are not a picture of living in the ‘Sabbath,’ both internally and externally. A great picture of the Egyptian system is expressed in the words of the song written by Dolly Parton:

Tumble outta bed and I stumble to the kitchen

Pour myself a cup of ambition

Yawn and stretch and try to come to life

Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin’

Out on the street the traffic starts jumpin’

With folks like me on the job from 9 to 5

Workin’ 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin’

Barely gettin’ by, it’s all takin’ and no givin’…

Most leaders don’t think they are ‘workaholics,’ but simply doing ‘what everyone else does.’ Ecc. 2:17-23 NET says, So I loathed all the fruit of my effort, for which I worked so hard on earth, because I must leave it behind in the hands of my successor. Who knows if he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will be master over all the fruit of my labor for which I worked so wisely on earth! This also is futile! So, I began to despair about all the fruit of my labor for which I worked so hard on earth. For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; however, he must hand over the fruit of his labor as an inheritance to someone else who did not work for it. This also is futile, and an awful injustice! What does a man acquire from all his labor and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth? For all day long, his work produces pain and frustration, and even at night his mind cannot relax! This also is futile!

    Results of Oppression

The following is a partial index of the characteristics of the oppressed life – the not-blessed life.

    1. Work very long hours to make a living. (You cannot make a life by long hours). It is the simple, educated logic of this world’s economic system that goes like this:

    • Get the best education and qualification that you can.

    • Get the best job that you can. Work two jobs if necessary. If married, get your wife to work outside the home and maximise your income.

    • Get the promotions that enable you to move up the ladder.

    • Make as much money as you can, so you can have the best house, car, and retirement as possible.

    • Enjoy your retirement. Die.

    2. Continual exhaustion. Many believers work such long hours and at such tiring labour, they get accustomed to ‘living exhausted.’ This is a recipe for physical and spiritual disaster.

    3. Lots and lots of overtime, often unpaid. The culture of this world is meant to make you a ‘slave’ to work, just as the Israelites were slaves to the Egyptians. Prov. 23:4 ESV says, Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich; be wise enough to control yourself.

    4. Weariness of soul and spirit. Sometimes a person whose life has become subservient to the economic oppression of our time, has a life emotionally described in Job 7:2-4 which says, Like a slave longing for the evening shadows…so I have been allotted months of futility, and nights of misery have been assigned to me. When I lie down I think, ‘How long before I get up?’ The night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn.’

    5. Feelings/emotions of dejection and discouragement lie barely beneath the surface. Often these feelings of soul-weariness are not correctly identified for what they are and the source of them. Unaddressed, this continual emotional state, leads to depression, anger, lowered resistance to temptation and poor judgments or decisions. It is not the ‘faith-life’ of Kingdom righteousness, peace and joy. Gal. 3:11; Rom. 14:17.

    6. Bosses and work colleagues have insane or unreasonable demands or ways of relating, creating great levels of stress and anxiety. Make the same number of bricks without straw. Ex. 5:18.

    7. What was once a good job, is now a job I loathe…but I am a ‘prisoner.’

    8. An oppressed mentality develops: (unwittingly accepting oppression)

    a. I have no other option—jobs are hard to come by.

    b. Somehow, some day, this season will end…it is only temporary, even though there is no end in sight.

    c. Others do not have to put up with I am putting up with. (self-pity)

    d. Everyone else is putting up with this same ‘stuff’ so I am no different…it is just the way it is, in this world.

    9. Health issues arise as the body breaks down under the load of stress.

    10. Other responsibilities outside of work are neglected. There is just not enough time to get everything done that everyone wants me to do…so back off! (the inner conversation and sometimes the outward expression).

    11. Family relationships suffer some deterioration for no apparent reason. Spouses and children become the recipients of zero-tolerance relating.

    12. Anger, for no apparent reason, lives just below the surface.

    13. Faulty and unwise decisions are taken to relieve the pressure.

    14. Holidays don’t seem to recharge the batteries.

    15. Justification of overwork doesn’t bring inner relief or financial blessing.

    16. In daily life, what might have been a little problem, often gets blown out of proportion, because the oppressed worker is just simply worn out.

    17. Little or no effort is given to resolve relational issues, as the spiritual perspective on what is really going wrong, has disappeared and the motivation to discuss it has evaporated.

    18. Financial goals provide the mandate or the push to get ahead in material blessing, unwittingly, through the world’s methods. Work all the time that you can, save all that you can, make any sacrifice that will get you more. Satisfy your own mind and heart, that what you are doing is for a worthy goal.

    19. Unwittingly invest more in the arm-of-the-flesh life of self-effort to achieve blessing, than the life of faith, characterised by the rest of faith.

    20. Comparison with others, who seem to get ahead without the slavish effort you are making, opens the door to further wrong thinking.

    Definition

The Hebrew and Greek words used for oppress are given the following meanings:

    • To look down on; to browbeat; to depress or push low

    • To afflict; to create a physical condition with the appearance of sickliness

    • Weakness; destitution; poverty; to reduce

    • To make desolate; scarcity

    • Conditions that create dis-stress; dismay

    • To push through a narrow place

    • The power to put down or push down

It is apparent that Satan uses this world’s system, to create conditions that not only oppress the unsaved, but also believers. Their lives are depleted and their perspective is distorted: their families suffer, their inner lives are a struggle constantly, their ministries are ‘put on the shelf’ or minimised. The Lost go neglected, as they become ‘invisible’ in the process of believers trying to make a living.

    Deliverance

God’s people, in every generation, have recognised various forms of oppression and cried out to the Lord, based on their relationship to Him and His undeniable promises. Judges 6:2, 6-9. The abundant life of John 10:10 applies in a world of economic uncertainty and oppression. God can and does remove bosses, work colleagues, and change conditions and pay, simply to bless His own. When the debilitating effort of work removes the sense of living ‘the blessed life,’ we must stop and look up. What is God saying to us? Are we living in the awesome promises of Ps. 112?

    Financial Promotion

The Bible has numerous stories of those who were oppressed that were promoted by God. The opposite of oppression is promotion. You move from being oppressed and demoted to promoted and blessed! Everything that is good in your life starts with faith. Dan. 3:28-30; Prov. 4:7-12 NLT; Isa. 40:3, 4; 49:11-13; Gen. 24:1; Gen. 26:12-14.

    Practical Steps:

    1. Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to renew your mind and perspective and tell you what to do through His written and spoken word. Judg. 4:3; 6:2,6-12. God came to Gideon in a time of spiritual and economic oppression and gave him a word that not only released him and his family, but others as well. He has a word for you, that will lift you out from under and place you on top—that is the nature of God’s favour upon your life, when you apply for it specifically. Ps. 145:14-16.

    2. Talk with someone else that you respect who is not in the same shoes as you are.

    3. Begin to declare your place of blessing, freedom and promotion based on specific Scriptures. You are meant to ‘gain what was promised’ and this requires the confession of faith. Heb. 11:33.

    4. Consider updating your c.v. and looking for a new job. (This consideration is simply a statement, in the first instance, that you are not accepting oppression as your lot in life.)

    5. Deal with the ‘spirit of fear’ that would seek to keep you under the hammer of oppression—often characterised by the statement, Its tough out there…jobs are not easy to come by. You are not out there—you are up there! Eph. 2:6. Fear is the spirit of unbelief that can only be rooted out, by discerning it and replacing it, with faith in His written/spoken word.

    6. Apologise to all whom you neglected or whom you mistreated, while you have been off your head. All the excuse-making that you did as you tried to ‘justify’ letting others down—whether your family or those on the team at the church where you are serving. Your poor life-management is/was not their fault. Humility is the ‘ground of grace.’ James 4:6.

    7. Refocus your soul, through meditating in the Word, to the place of rest and faith, so that the works reflex is replaced with a believing heart. Take the time to dig out of the Scriptures, at least five reasons that reveal that you are blessed, prosperous, and on your way to great manifestations.

    8. Distinguish clearly between what are simply ‘work issues’ and what is a condition of oppression, that seeks to press you down. You don’t want to leave this classroom of learning, prematurely, without having learned all of the lessons He wants you to learn. You will face those lessons again, if you fail to learn the lessons in front of you in the current job, i.e. relationship with authority, how to endure with joy, serving the Lord—not just the boss and the company and the team, work-life balance, reaching out to the Lost at work, punctuality, excellence in job performance, consistently communicating with others, and using right speech. Eph. 4:29.

    9. Create a new purse by your giving and sowing. Luke 12:33 and Matt. 6:33 establish your first priority, as your Kingdom assignment. 1 Kings 17:9-16; Luke 6:38; 2 Cor. 9:6. The purse you create in Heaven by your generosity, becomes the ‘bank of financial blessings’ that are yours. The most generous giver is the greatest receiver. It is a law of God. Luke 6:38 ESV says that "with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

    10. Make a decision of faith to live in the overflow of Sabbath living. Sabbath living is double portion, having more than enough, and supernatural supply. This is only accomplished by exercising faith in your giving and sowing. On the seventh day (Sabbath) God had finished all that was necessary to provide for man so He rested. Man was created on the sixth day to live in the seventh day or the Sabbath day of abundant, no-sweat provision. He would work, but not sweat or live in running after provision. Luke 6:32.

    11. Find out how to get out of debt. Get out of debt. Prov. 22:7 ESV.

    12. Acknowledge by writing on a piece of paper the areas you have secretly worried about especially in relation to finances or the future. Get some Scriptures to replace those thoughts and habitual attitudes. Light the paper on fire and burn up the past worries. Live as though you will always have more than enough. Jer. 17:5-8. Ps. 112:3, 5-9.

    13. Recognise that the challenge of getting out of the Egyptian system is a major life lesson. If you fail, you will continue to live under the ‘hammer of Egypt’ and suffer the consequences. Who is your Source? How will you access His provision and live in Sabbath? Often leaders, unwittingly, think as is referenced in Ex. 14:12, It would be better for us to serve the Egyptians (system) than to die in the desert (of unemployment). Their faith for God’s supernatural provision and blessing is unused, as they seek to advance and survive, by the world’s economic plan. Ps. 112:3 ESV says, …wealth and riches are in his house. — the home of the God-fearing, God-believing man or woman. Ex 13:14 NLT says, ‘With the power of His mighty hand, the Lord brought us out of Egypt, the place of our slavery.

    14. Position yourself for the last-days wealth transfer from the Egyptian system into the hands of faith-filled, covenantal believers. Prov. 13:22 ESV says, "…the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous. Isa. 60:5, 11 says, Then you will look and be radiant, your heart will throb and swell with joy; the wealth on the seas will be brought to you, to you the riches of the nations will come… Your gates will always stand open, they will never be shut, day or night, so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations— their kings led in triumphal procession. Isa. 61:6,7 says, And you will be called priests of the LORD, you will be named ministers of our God. You will feed on the wealth of nations, and in their riches, you will boast. Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so, you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours."

    • God told Israel to plunder the Egyptians. Ex 12:35-36 says, The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. The Lord had made the Egyptians favourably disposed towards the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so, they plundered the Egyptians.

    • God gave His people the lands and property of other nations. Deut. 6:10-11. When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you — a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant — then when you eat and are satisfied…. Judg. 18:10 says, When you get there, you will find an unsuspecting people and a spacious land that God has put into your hands, a land that lacks nothing whatever.

    • God had an unsaved ruler supply all the needs for building Solomon’s temple (Cyrus). Ezra 1:1,2 NLT says, …the LORD stirred the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to put this proclamation in writing and send it throughout his kingdom: This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build Him a Temple at Jerusalem which is in Judah."

    • God promised a day or season of time in which His people would be blessed with material wealth, so they could reach the end-time harvest. Ezek. 34:27-29. The trees of the field will yield their fruit and the ground will yield its crops; the people will be secure in their land. They will know that I am the Lord, when I break the bars of their yoke and rescue them from the hands of those who enslaved them. They will no longer be plundered by the nations, nor will wild animals devour them. They will live in safety, and no-one will make them afraid. I will provide for them a land renowned for its crops, and they will no longer be victims of famine in the land or bear the scorn of the nations. Micah 4:13 NASU says, Arise and thresh, daughter of Zion, For your horn I will make iron. And your hoofs I will make bronze, that you may pulverize many peoples, that you may devote to the LORD their unjust gain. And their wealth to the Lord of all the earth.

    • God blessed Abraham, to be a blessing, to all the nations of the world. We are descendants of Abraham.

Do the following things to move into the outpouring that produces financial rest and blessing, that you might fund the last-days-harvest work.

    • Tithe.

    • Practice graduated tithing. Move up 10% at a time continually.

    • Be uncommonly generous, like the Early Church believers.
