Selected Scripture
This book is dedicated to my two daughters Meaghan and Sophia.
They are beautiful in mind, body and spirit.
My prayer is they will live life to the fullest, doing God’s will.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This book could not have been completed without the help of many. I felt led to write it. Interestingly, all those who assisted me are terrific leaders in their respective environments. Where would this world be without leaders?
Rex Freriks and Michael Lamonica are my two best friends, and my most prolific supporters and encouragers. They were a constant voice of motivation. They offered the very first edits and course corrections of my book. Both have been leaders for two-plus decades and offered me insight no one else could. Rex’s Mom Connie also offered her editing expertise, inspiration and encouragement. Christian moms have such awesome responsibility and play such a phenomenal role as an example for their kids.
Ken Rodriguez (USAF Colonel Retired) and Steven Schaick (USAF Chaplain Colonel; endorsed by the Presbyterian Church (USA)) have been mentors of mine. I met Ken in the early nineties and Steve in 2005. Both are very knowledgeable of the Bible and terrific leaders. They provided the strong hand that I needed in their editing.
I am grateful to have Chad Montgomery (USAF Chaplain Captain) in my life. He is a maturing leader and his humility is unmatched. He was a constant steady voice of reason and encouragement. We all need Chad Montgomery’s in our life.
Dr. Ron Crews BA, MDiv, DMin (USAR Colonel Retired; Endorsing Agent Grace Churches International) has been a mentor since I met him in early 2010. I was drawn to Manna Church one day and as fate would have it Ron was in his office when a young man Kyle introduced us. I told Ron about my book, and he immediately encouraged me to take his class on Romans (which I did). He prayed for me then, and has prayed for me ever since. He gave me the most pointed feedback on my format and content. Leaders lead, and sometimes when we need tough love, leaders need to give it. Ron is a great man, a great leader, and a great friend.
PART 1
INTRODUCTION
In June 2007, I invited Shawn Withy-Allen to address the opening of our Vacation Bible School of my former church. Shawn and I met in the business community, and we are now friends. Currently, he is the director of RUSH Campus ministries, and the Student Ministries pastor for Manna Church, the church where my family and I belong. Shawn also baptized my daughter Meaghan in July 2011.
Shawn opened our VBS with a prayer and commented I’d like to talk to you about one of my heroes…Paul.
Then he read some Scripture from one of Paul’s letters. I recollect some general thoughts about Paul and the Bible. But Shawn’s presence, his demeanor, and his message stuck with me. I, too, had thought a lot about Paul.
Convinced I had so much more to learn about life, leadership, and my God, in July 2007 I committed to reading the Bible every day. I made it my goal to read the whole Bible cover to cover before the end of 2007. I was pretty familiar with most of the popular stories, but once I started making Bible reading a daily commitment, it enriched my life in amazing ways. My reading also led me to a new fascination with Paul, and built an insatiable appetite to learn more about him.
During one of my readings around April 2008, I felt something
influencing me to write a book about the Apostle Paul, so I did. I am a student of leadership. I read about leadership, I study it, I write about it, I teach it, and I execute its principles. My first book Character, Competence, and Commitment…the Measure of a Leader (Authorhouse.com) was a reflection of my 21+ year career in a unique and elite USAF Special Operations environment.
This book’s theme is True Leadership as defined and demonstrated by the Apostle Paul. After Jesus, Paul was the most influential leader in Christianity. That took faith, hope, and love. It also took perseverance and whole lot of passion. Leadership principles pervade almost every single situation in Paul’s life and ministry. The same could be said of us, for there are endless opportunities to lead and be led in a lifetime.
When you read and study Acts and all of Paul’s letters, you can’t help but be amazed at what this man did. I marvel at what he went through (beaten, lost at sea, walked thousands of miles, stoned, flogged, imprisoned, and executed). I am intrigued at the sheer magnitude of his mission. I am thankful for the immense influence this man had on the largest religion in the world. I realize there are leadership lessons for every believer throughout Paul’s writings.
This book is a byproduct of my own ministry. I first want to glorify God. I attempt to do this by exposing readers to His Word. I believe God will be glorified, if the reader gleans at least some of the leadership nuggets through God’s Word as they pertain to Paul.
Just because I wrote this book does not, by any means, imply that I am perfect in the area of leadership application. I fail to live up to these ideals every day. Failure doesn’t mean I am not saved. It does not mean that I can’t teach these principles. I strive every day to glorify Him. I am thankful for His grace and know I am under construction each and every day.
My personal mission is to positively influence lives. I do this through various avenues, and most specifically through Faith, Family and Finance. I try my best to be a positive influence regardless of environment. It is my prayer that God will use these words to impart knowledge to the reader, and inspire some form of action by the reader. I will not attempt to make a Biblical translation or hermeneutical assessment of Paul’s words; instead I will articulate simple, but profound leadership lessons that have influenced me, taken from the verses I will cite for you.
We gain so much in our own walk by consistently and persistently studying God’s inspired word. These verses can teach us so much, if we let them. So let’s get started on some leadership lessons through Paul’s writings and experiences, as laid out in the Bible.
LEADERSHIP AS I SEE IT
Leadership is influence. Leadership is making things happen. Leadership is about influencing people toward accomplishing an objective or task. Good leadership means the followers want
to do what the leader wants them to do. Leadership is inspiring people to do more than they think they can. True leadership encapsulates all that is good about leadership. True leadership glorifies God, edifies others, and builds His Kingdom.
Thousands of books have been written about leadership. The reason there are thousands of books on leadership is because there are thousands of opinions on how or why to influence, to inspire, to make things happen, or to get people to accomplish some task. You have to influence people to get things done. How a leader influences people will vary from leader to leader, and some do it better than others.
In summary, my mission is to Positively
