#1 I am an infantry officer right out of school, which makes me dangerous. I can make a mess with two-thousand-pound bombs. I am the terror of plastic targets. I want to destroy al-Qaeda, which is easy to demonize with their werewolf faces and medieval ways.
#2 I was about to break the news to my wife, Elizabeth, that I was going to Afghanistan. She was shocked. She didn’t want to go with me, but she knew I wanted to be in the fight, so she accepted it.
#3 I was sent to the 2nd Battalion of the 32nd Infantry Regiment, which was deployed to Afghanistan’s Kunar Province, next to the Pakistan border. Our unit would push deep into enemy territory and take the war into their backyard.
#4 The first weekend in February, Elizabeth and I head to a bar in Sackett’s Harbor, a town on the shore of Lake Ontario. It is like any other bar, except all the customers are military, and everyone is coming from or going to war.

I am not quick with words, so when someone casts a sharp line at me, my typical response is to blush and only later do I think up something smart to say. We often fight for fun. We are learning how to be married.
#6
I was assigned to A Company, 3rd platoon, and 6 meant platoon leader. I loved every minute of it. I was thinking, War is freedom. For a few weeks, the heralded enemy attacks and bombs stopped. We had a few skirmishes, but nothing major.
#7
The fight is at six hundred meters, so I am ordering mortars onto a preset target. The timing and location are no coincidence. I am facing a seasoned opponent. Mortars are my best weapon right now, and I have one chance.

The Black Hawk operation was a success, and the enemy was pushed back. But the casualties were high, and
