#1 I was sent to the Republic of South Vietnam in 1968, and I had every intention of spending my last dime sucking up every deranged fantasy I could while I was still breathing. By the time I got to Oakland, I didn’t have enough body fluids left to sweat properly.

#2 The 14-hour flight to Vietnam is a boring drudgery or drunken binge, depending on if you have money or not. NCOs can drink, but the lower enlisted swine are limited to two or three beers.

#3 I was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red One. With our ranks, we would have become platoon sergeants if we had been shanghaied. The members of this division emphasized the last word in their nickname; we, on the other hand, emphasized the second word.

#4 The author's warning bells were ringing as he heard Bernie describe how he had gotten all the cherries freed from their infantry assignment. This was an SF assignment, because anything that would get you away from the Division press gangs had to have some heavy priority.

The author's warning bells were ringing as he heard Bernie describe how he had gotten all the cherries freed from their infantry assignment. This was an SF assignment, because anything that would get you away from the Division press gangs had to have some heavy priority.

    #5

The assignment was to be a part of S-l, a special forces unit. It was a deep penetration and no artillery support mission. It was voluntary, and the guys there were good men with lots of combat experience.

    #6

I knew that Bachelor had been in CCN, which was a quieter operational area than CCC. I was sure that he had not been up at CCN when the bad stuff had happened. I was trying to avoid telling Bernie that I had heard about CCN, because I knew that he would think that I was crazy.

    #7

I was finalizing a plan to sell Kevin to a cannibal tribe when eight of the liberators graduating class came into the shower with us. They were resplendent in their Tropical Worsted and berets, and they were eager to go downtown with us.

    #8

The author went to Mama Bic’s, an unofficial Special Forces headquarters, to catch up with buddies and scout a prospect for getting out of going up north to be sacrificed on some weird altar of certain death.

    #9

The place is like old home week. Within a few minutes, we are safely nestled in our booth with the crowd washing around us like a sea of uniforms. I am soaking in cognac and coke, and soon I am up to date on the situation in-country.

The Gaels were able to get the airman back to sanity with a couple of well-placed kidney shots and a good stiff kick to his solar plexus. They were soon out of the restaurant and on their way back to the base, with three jeeps full of Military Police and their White Mice counterparts in tow.
