They Call Me Megan - Gene Uhlig
CHAPTER ONE
T hey call me Megan .
Megan laughs but then notices she was laughing alone. The class was silent. No one got her joke. She was embarrassed. Not for herself. She was embarrassed for all of those classmates who had no clue that she was referring to the opening line of Moby Dick.
You see, Megan may be only 13 years old but she is an advanced student. Advanced is being modest. In reality, she is a genius. However, being extremely intelligent and advanced in learning does not mean a person is advanced emotionally. She was still subject to the feelings and reactions of a 13-year-old girl.
Recovering quickly from her slight stumble, Megan continued with her class report on the odds of there being life on other planets and then the odds of alien life ever visiting the planet earth. She included a thought that seemed to others somewhat disconnected from her theme but in her mind there did exist a connection. That thought focused on how bad she felt for the planet Pluto when it found out it was no longer a planet. She had heard a song by a singer named John Prine regarding the topic and since then she thought deeply about it. To average people like most of us that is a sign of her odd way of thinking.
She concludes, So it is my belief that all matter, yes, all mass in the universe is connected in ways that we do not yet understand. So, regardless of distance and/or location, all matter shares feelings and subliminal communication. For example, matter on a planet 20,000 light years away can instantaneously feel what happens on earth and vice versa. It even can communicate. This explains my belief that Pluto can indeed feel slighted and even insulted. Or perhaps it just doesn’t care. But it does in fact know. There is absolutely no bridge of understanding however between matter’s feelings and communications and that of human life. But, imagine if we could find one. We could communicate with matter anywhere in the universe through the very ground upon which we stand. So many mysteries would be solved.
When she concluded there was no applause only complete silence. The teacher’s mouth was hanging open. Finally, after about 5 seconds which felt like 5 minutes, there was a polite clapping of hands at Megan’s adorable insanity.
Chapter Two
L ook Jeff, you are a respected astrophysicist and you have done great work. But .. uh ... listen I do not wish to offend you or hurt your feelings but ..
Dr. Jeff Jeffrey Jeffers, everyone calls him Jeff, was getting more and more perturbed by the second.
Jack, you can’t hurt my feeling. Before someone can hurt your feelings you have to care what they think.
Well, good then I can just say it. You are making a fool of yourself with this theory of yours that matter can think and feel and communicate. You are losing respect among your peers. If you insist on spending time on this foolhardy theory then you should do it quietly or your gonna find yourself on the outside looking in.
"I kinda like it out here. On the outside. I don’t
