Mind Reader

For as long as I can remember I have been able to read other people's minds. I don't know why I don't know how, I just know I can. I haven’t met anyone like me. Sometimes it gets lonely.

Now, I have always promised myself that I would not abuse these 'powers' and would never, ever use them on my friends or family. It is a bit like a radio. I can tune in to whoever I want, whenever I want, as long as I'm near them. I can also just as easily turn it off. Now, of course, I am no saint. I won't say that I have never used it to get out of punishment or to find out where the sweets were hidden, but I have always promised myself to use it well. I was always able to keep this intention until that one evening with Cathy...

Cathy has been my best friend since kindergarten. We sat next to each other on the first day because our surnames ended in the same letter and we have been inseparable ever since. We do everything together and I never really felt the need to read her mind.

There were of course several occasions where I had to withstand the urge to do it. Every time I saw even a glimmer of a tear in her eyes, I wanted to dive in to know what or who hurt her and make it all better. She means the world to me. If I were to ever tell anyone about my powers it would be here. But the fear of rejection made me hesitate every time the words touched my lips. Would she think I was a freak? Would she be afraid I had misused my powers on her? Or would she just think different of me in a way I couldn’t foresee?

Cathy groaned next me. A tantalizing sound that stirred something deep inside of me. I looked up from the phone I was scrolling on to see her stretch her arms and arch her back. Her chest thrust upwards while her back made a satisfying cracking sound. The thin fabric of her summer dress stretched over her enticing breasts.

God, we have done absolutely nothing today other than scroll through social media and binge-watch this show, she said.

Come on, it is the first day of summer. We are entitled to some brain-numbing activities after those exams. I said mimicking her moves and stretching out.
