    The Luna's Mate - M.D. LaBelle

Chapter 1 The Darkness That Surrounds Him

Tonight is a stranger night than most because the moon is set so low that it looks like you could touch it if you raised your hand into the air. It’s already so big that it looks a lot larger than it normally is, and in a few days, it will be a full moon. That full moon will be so huge that it will block out most of the night sky. What is even stranger, is the fact that it is extremely hot out for May and the air is so thick with moisture that everything feels slick as I sit in my reclining chair.

I stare out the window with an odd feeling of anticipation running through me. Perhaps it is because I sense something not quite right tonight. Or because there is danger in the air, and it is almost explosive.

With my eyes glued to the woods in front of me, I silently watch a fawn follow its mother through the clearing. Sitting forward a little in my chair to get a better look, I watch as both the mother and the fawn move further. When they do, they move so deliberately that they too seem to sense the presence of danger as it seeps throughout everything. As they approach the edge of the woods, the moment the mother relaxes, the wolf attacks.

Attacking with such precision and speed, the fawn has no hope for making it out of this alive. The only thing the mother can ask is that the wolf makes it quick and doesn’t let the little one live long enough to suffer. Thinking that this is surely the end for it, I sit back to watch the scene in front of me unfold.

However, something else totally unexpected happens. While sitting there in the darkness, I watch as the mother stands her ground and refuses to leave her little one to be torn to shreds by the predator. Instead, she stares the wolf in the eyes and dares him to attack her.

Shocked, I look on as the wolf retreats when it sees that it doesn’t have the upper hand. Then I murmur to myself, I’ll be damned. If I could just find a woman like that who would sacrifice herself for the ones she loves, I would give her the world, the moon and the stars.

    Knock

    Knock

Hearing the knock at the door, I unfold my numb legs before standing up and walking over to it. Who is it? I ask with a gruff tone as I feel a bit irritated that someone bothered me while I was enjoying some quiet time before dinner.

These times seem so few and far in between when I have so many people vying for my attention. I shake my head and open the door rather violently while glaring at the woman from just a few feet away. She stares at me with wide eyes and then steps back before stating in a shaky voice, It is dinner time Julian, I was told to come get you as soon as it was ready.

Immediately feeling bad, I change my whole disposition before speaking again. In a soft voice, I say, Yes. I am sorry to scare you. I will be right down in a minute or two. Can you please tell them I am just getting ready?

Hesitating for a moment, she looks me in the eyes and answers, Yes, but please hurry. Alpha Roderick sounds rather irritated and there is no telling what he might do if he has to wait for too long before eating. I watch as she turns on her heels and walks to the stairs.

She stops and turns her head to give me a glance and a smile before making her way down to the kitchen to relay the information. I assume she does, because I hear Alpha Roderick head up the stairs with anger on his face and quickness in his step. He is looking for a fight and if he isn’t careful, he will get one.

When I head out of my room, I almost run right into him. Turning around, Roderick cries out, Man. Can’t you hurry up? I am starving and we have something to attend to tonight as soon as we finish.

Glancing up into his angry face, I ask with a cool tone, What are you talking about, may I ask?

I will tell you more after the meal, but apparently there will be a situation that needs handling. Through various sources, I have found out that The Wind Walkers Pack has decided to hold a rave and trap unsuspecting party goers for their next meal. Surely we must stop them before it draws too much attention to ourselves. He glances over at me with a worried look on his brow while stating the facts of the problem.

Nodding, I think about what I must do next before sitting down at the table and eating dinner. Just before pulling out my chair, I quickly look over at Roderick and declare, As soon as we are done, we will gather everyone and leave to stop this massacre before it goes too far. They should know that I don’t tolerate this kind of behavior.

When everyone at the table notes this, they all wait for me to sit before they do. Then once all the food has been eaten and everyone’s appetites have been satiated, I stand up and state to everyone, It is time. Grab your things and let’s go do some damage control.

Right before I walk out the front door after everyone else, I hesitate for a moment to wonder why of all times do they dare to try my patience? Could it be the sheer fact that I have been quiet for so long and haven’t shown authority? Must I?

Thinking to myself, I stand there contemplating this in deep thought. No matter what, the humans must be protected at all costs. No one must ever figure out that we really do exist. Because the consequences of that realization in the humans, would be catastrophic to our species. They would hunt us down like they did with common wolves and almost eradicate us.

After shaking my head, I shut the door behind me and then as everyone waits, I walk to the truck and climb in. While turning it on, I put it into gear and look in the rearview mirror for a split second before murmuring to myself, Perhaps this is what has me so on edge or maybe it is something entirely different.

As I drive to the rave with everyone else following in the caravan, I get a strange sense that there is more to this then what everyone is saying.

    Chapter 2 Meeting Arabella

Hearing the music from miles away, I know precisely where the rave is being held. It is already in full swing, and I just hope that we have gotten there early enough before the massacre has started. Driving past the woods, I see the clearing ahead and right away my senses go in overdrive when I smell the Alpha of The Wind Walkers pack, Jordan.

When I don’t smell blood, I call it a good sign and start to drive as fast as I dare to before arriving at the destination. The minute I hit the open path, I signal to the others behind me and stop just before the old, abandoned building. The bright neon lights filter through the cracks in the walls and light up the hood of my truck before I ever get out.

Motioning for the rest to stay put, I signal for Beta Daniel and Beta John to follow me first. Not knowing where the Wind Walkers are right at that moment, I’m cautious while creeping around in the dark shadows. As I hear the music’s volume get turned up even louder, I realize that the pack is already inside and is just about to attack. Why else would the music become so loud, so fast? I think to myself before I rush to the entrance and then motion for everyone else to advance.

Leading the way, they all get behind me in a matter of seconds. Getting ready to pounce the minute I open the door, they stand there looking when I stay still and wait for some signal before going in and taking control. Glancing at each other with questioning looks on their faces, one of them starts to whisper and then shuts up the second I glare at him angrily.

Not hearing any screaming, I open the door quietly, so I don’t alert anyone to our presence. Slowly walking into the room, I find that the Wind Walkers pack is circling the humans with murderous intent in their eyes. As their fangs protrude from their mouths while they wait to attack, my group disperses through the crowd quickly until they are between the humans and the offending pack.

Having absolutely no idea what is about to take place, the humans keep dancing to the loud music and are completely oblivious to everything. Standing there ready at the drop of a hat to gain control, I feel something strange as I stare at all the humans bouncing up and down to the music. There is one girl with brown hair and green eyes, who stands out from all the others.

Feeling drawn to her, I start to walk over to where she stands. But in the meantime, Alpha Jordan sneaks up behind me and almost hits me in the head. I turn just in time to stop him and say quietly so to not scare the humans, Stop, right now. I am your king and you had better take heed because if you don’t, you won’t live to see tomorrow.

Knowing that I mean business, Alpha Jordan backs off for the moment before I walk over to him and say with dangerous intent, I will rip your throat out if you don’t stop right this instant.

The minute that Alpha Jordan sees the golden shade of my eyes, he stands down and collects his pack before leaving quietly. The whole time this is going on, the humans have no clue what was just about to happen. So, I am glad that it didn’t turn out badly. When it is all said and done, I sigh before turning around to talk to the brown-haired girl with green eyes.

Once I feel my wolf is in check, I turn around and scan the room for her. Not finding her, I watch the crowd move from side to side and the lights flicker onto the dance floor. All the rest of my pack watches from the shadows for any more problems, as I stand there almost in a trance.

Still searching through the crowd, I see her for a split second before she is hidden again. When the lights turn down and the music slows, she emerges like something from a movie I once saw where the woman was a beautiful princess. The most amazing part is that her face is glowing from where the moonlight is showing through the cracks in the ceiling.

While I stare at her, she senses me and turns to face me directly. Then our eyes meet, and I feel something that I don’t have any power over. A sudden overpowering need.

Walking over to her carefully so I don’t spook her, I wonder if I can just get her name. If I do, perhaps I will find out why I am so enchanted by her presence. But the minute I do, I realize that I am wrong because I stand next to her, and my hands gravitate to hers. As I stand there speechless, I wonder why this man has power over her.

Finally, I ask her while leaning close to her ear, May I ask for your name and number?

She glances up at my face and I would give anything to know what is running through her head at this precise moment. Her friend walks up behind her and pokes her in the back to get her attention. She smiles at me and then the green-eyed girl turns around to see what her friend wants before I get my answer. Feeling put out, I notice Alpha Jordan just outside the door staring back at me.

Watching him carefully, I return my attention to my green eyed girl and gaze into her beautiful emerald, green eyes. Her friend raises her voice while sounding sarcastic and says, I didn’t know you liked old men.

The green-eyed girl says softly so I can barely hear it, She is just jealous for once. And then she turns her attention back to the me before saying sweetly, My name is Arabella. If you really want my number, give me your phone and I will type it in for you.

Waiting for me to hand it to her, she stares at the crowd and then I notice the minute this whole situation starts to register with her. Her eyes start to scan the crowd and then pick out my group. She looks out the door at the other pack and then I watch as her eyes turn from happiness to terror.

Knowing that if I don’t curb this now, I will lose her, I hand her my phone and say, By the way, I am Julian. It’s nice to meet you.

When she accepts it without hesitation and types in her number, I quickly check her out while she stares at the phone’s screen and has no clue how much I desire her. Noticing that she is done and is about to look up, I glance away just in time before she smiles back at me and returns it. She stares into my eyes and says, Here, it’s all good to go. Now you can just click on my name, and it will dial my number.

I smile at Arabella while thinking, Tomorrow for sure, I am calling her, and I will have her over for dinner or something.

Feeling a bit strange, I scan the room for my group and then when I can see them all, I motion for everyone to move out. As they get in their vehicles, I stare back at the rave and wonder to myself what strange power she has over me and what I am going to do about it.

    Chapter 3 The Next Day

Hearing someone yelling in the background, I look over at Alpha Conroy and Beta Dean before scanning the room to investigate. I have been patiently waiting all morning to call Arabella and was just about to, when I heard the commotion begin. Laying my eyes upon Omega Terence and Omega Shelley over by the far wall, I can tell at once that they are in a heated argument and that is where the yelling is coming from.

How dare you! You know that I had my heart set on that, and you just threw it out. Does whatever I feel mean nothing to you? Shelley stares at Terence with tears in her eyes before stomping off.

Noting that there is something terribly wrong, I stand up from my chair and walk over to Terence before whispering so no one else can hear but the two of us, You need to fix whatever is wrong.

I stare down Terence to make sure he knows that I mean business and then after a few seconds, I take my eyes off him and continue to scan the room for any other potential problems. Only when I am satisfied that everything is under control for the moment, do I sit back down in the corner and take out my phone. Glancing down at it, I realize something.

Yesterday, I had turned it off after getting her number. There wasn’t any need for the phone all last night, but what if she had tried to call me? When she placed her number in my phone, did she grab my number for hers as well? I sit there wondering if I should even call her at all because this attraction is so strange that it feels off. She is a human after all, the two of our species don’t get along.

Putting my feet up on the coffee table directly in front of my chair, I sit back and relax. Then I glance around the room one more time, before sighing and pulling up my contacts. After finding her name, I press on the phone button.

Listening with the phone to my ear, I finally hear a ring once and then twice before hearing her breathing and her sweet voice. Hi. I thought you would never call me. The minute I hear it, my heart starts to beat fast, and I can already feel my face twist into a smile.

Hesitating for a few seconds, I eventually say with a somewhat forced tone to my voice, I had to take care of some business here first, I am the head of a rather large empire after all. With that said, I say no more about it and then declare, Get ready. I am going to pick you up and show you around my castle. Just tell me your address and I will pick you up in a half an hour.

Hearing breathing on the other end, I wait patiently for her answer. When her voice is no longer sweet, I begin to wonder if I have said to much, and now she has changed her mind. Actually. I hear her pause and then state, I need a little time to get ready. I haven’t showered yet or anything. So how about in an hour and I will be ready?

She tells me her address before hanging up and I sit there and stare at the wall till the time is up. When the clock strikes 2, I stand up quickly and grab my things before heading out because her place is only about 15 minutes from me. As I climb in the truck, I wonder how this will all go. Because when she sees the place and hears how those around us treat me, she will start to put two and two together and figure out that I am not just another billionaire, but so much more.

Arriving at the address, I note that it is in the middle of the woods and there is a long driveway that cuts clear back about a mile and a half. Finally coming to a clear patch, I see a little red brick house and her smiling face standing outside waiting for me on the front porch. Right away my eyes travel down her body and then back up again. Taking inventory of her clothes very carefully and figuring out what I must take off to mate with her.

When I am a few feet from the car in the driveway, I stop and shut off the truck for the moment. As I climb out, a thought runs through my head, and I stop before saying a single thing. I know full well, that if I come off as an arrogant asshole, she may not want anything to do with me. Then again, she might be the type of girl who likes that sort of thing.

So, the minute I walk up to her, I state, Get in. You look sexy as hell and if I don’t restrain myself, I might very well have your clothes off before we get back home.

From the look in her eyes in response to what I just said, I read the whole situation wrong. The next thing I know she starts to step backwards. I quickly start laughing and mask my real intentions by saying jokingly, You do know that I was kidding. I am not the big bad wolf after all. I just want to spend some time with you because you seem interesting.

Wondering if she will fall for it, I raise my hand to my neck and start to scratch the back. Whenever I get uncomfortable, I find that I do that without thinking. Seeing that I am nervous, she automatically calms down and smiles before answering, Yes. I know. You are just the older guy with the bad hair day. That’s how I placed you in my memory. I have a system for those kinds of things, or I would forget it. I often do quite frequently. My mom says it has something to do with a learning disability and my long-term memory.

Smiling at her to make her feel at ease, I then respond with in a casual tone, Let’s go. I am having something specially prepared for you for dinner. I think you will find that you like it. Or at least I hope you do. A frown forms on my lips as soon as I start to worry again about what she thinks.

Why does this girl have such an affect on me? This is really troublesome, because if I don’t get my act together, she won’t want anything to do with me. Let alone be my mate.

Following me to the truck, I lead her to the passenger door and then open it for her. As I watch her delicate frame climb up into the truck, I feel movement in my jeans and know that if I am not careful, my jeans will soon be too tight to drive home. Swallowing hard, I try to think of something that will ease the swelling and then it goes down. Thinking of my grandmother usually works, because the minute I think of that old, wrinkled face, everything else just disappears.

After taking care of the immediate problem, I get back in the driver’s seat and turn on the engine. Hearing it purr, I smile and look over at her before placing my hand on the shifter and putting it into gear. Right away it responds without hesitation, and I drive off down the long driveway through the woods, back to the road before turning.

Looking over at her, I let a little smirk cross my face and then I turn on the radio before she becomes too uncomfortable with the silence. On the way home, we sing along to songs that we know and when we don’t, I pay attention to the road, and she stares out at the endless houses. When we eventually get home because I took the long route, I stare at her eyes that become huge saucers the minute she sees the castle in the clearing.

She turns to me and asks with the voice of a wonderous child, Is this really yours?

I smile and turn to her before answering, Yes. It is and many more. I have them all over the country. My dad ruled before I did and had them built because he has always loved the castles in Scotland. He figured if he was going to be king, he might as well reign from the walls like one in his castles. Realizing that I said too much, I hurry and try to mask it. You do know I am just kidding?

With huge eyes, she turns to me and says quietly with uncertainty, I guess.

Still staring at her eyes, she finally gazes into mine and says in excitement, I can’t wait to see the inside. This is the most awesome thing I have ever seen.

I open the door and get out as fast as we stop, before rushing to her door and opening it. The smile on
