Entrant á Vostre palau, fa alguns dies, quan més sovintejavan los horrorosos telegrames sobre ’ls desconsoladors efectes dels terratrèmols d’ Andalusía, vegí que multitut de persones Vos feyan dipositari de sos dons y almoynes. L’ un deixava diners, l’ altre roba, l’ un un parell de cadires, l’ altre un moble de cuyna, aquest una taula que potser necessitava per menjar, aquell un coixí ò matalàs que tal vegada aquella nit trobaria á menos Un comerciant regalá 700 barretines, que en eixes diades de fret rigorós abrigarán los caps andalusos un xich més que l’ayrós calanyès; un sacerdot, que no volgué anomenarse, deixá son manteu, y una viuda obligá á son fill de pochs anys á llevarse ’l gaban y á deixarlo allí, tot esplicantli que sería per algun pobre noy d’ Andalusía que estava despullat y que no tenía mare. Avergonyit y ab les llágrimes als ulls me ’n aní á casa á cercar mon òbol humil. ¿Què puch donar? me diguí á mi mateix, y aixís com si hagués sigut flequer hauria duyt un parell de pans, sent poeta, me creguí obligat á donar poesía, quod autem habeo, hoc tibi do. Vuydí mes escorregudes carteres, aprofití algun retall, doní forma á alguna idea, y veusaquí la historia d’aquest petit llibre que, per nostres germans d’Andalusía, poso en les Vostres mans, pura y senzillament com una almoyna del cor.

LA CARITAT
¿Heu vist lo cedre altívol, del Líbano en la serra,
alsarse com de fulles y tronchs altra Babel?
ses branques, hont la volva de neu jamay s’aferra,
s’ abaixan á la terra,
mentres son front de fletxa s’enfonza dins lo cel.
Haver podría d’ astres del cel una corona,
y se la fa de fulles y un cap de brot humil,
tot lo que reb la branca més alta á la segona,
aqueixa á terra ho dona,
á gotes la roynada, la pluja fil á fil.
De la virtut més alta lo cedre es una imatge:
los núbols atravessa cercant
