    Up until a few days ago, Elyot had spent his entire life within the city walls of the capital of the planet Adghal. He had climbed to the tops of those walls from time to time to look down at the jungles and grasslands that spread around the mountain the city was perched on. Not with any longing to leave his home, just out of a desire to look around.

    But since the moment he had met Alextra and Keani in Mama Scotti's restaurant, it felt like he had been everywhere. Down into the jungles, up into space to the far side of the moon, then down again to the heart of the desert that lurked just beyond the horizon from the city. He had seen hidden rebel spaceports, killer trees, and the most magical of gardens.

    So it felt a little strange, after all those wide-ranging journeys, to be back home.

    Well, sort of. Elyot had grown up close to the walls on the western side of the city. Pretty much the poorest part of town. He knew that cluster of blocks intimately, every rooftop and every sewer grate.
