About this ebook

Ella moved to the city to start her adult life, and arrived just in time for the collapse of the old society. Now she is one more refugee inside her own country, trying to find something that still has meaning in a world from which all that mattered has departed. There are still things which could inspire, and there are still people who could build again, but someone has to take the first step.

This story depicts a harsh reality that may not be suitable for younger readers.

Ella looked at the dead cat in the alcove where it lay all curled up like hope itself. It was a brindle, like Jekers, but darker or maybe just dirtier. She was distressed to realize that she hadn't thought about Jekers in months. He had been such a big part of her life all through her childhood, stretching his big body across her lap every time she sat down, sticking his whole head into her mug to drink the last of her hot chocolate, or, when she was older, batting the bottles of cosmetics off of the counter when she was getting ready for dates, as if trying to keep her at home with him.

Voices floated down to her, distracting her from her memories. She moved to the other side of the crypt and stepped up on the first stair to look out through a hole rusted through the bottom of the iron door. All she could see was one slim, pale child's ankle rising out of a shiny red only-for-church shoe and white sock with a tiny red rose embroidered on it.

She heard a woman's voice say, And what kind of car is that?

A small child's voice said, It's an armored car.

The woman asked, What do you do when you see an armored car?

Look for the Jolly Roger painted on it.

Is there a Jolly Roger on that car?

There was a slight pause, then the small voice said, No. There's a girl painted on it. A girl with big boobs like Vika.

What would you do if it was a Jolly Roger?

I would run home. I would not stop or look back I would run all the way home.

    "That's right, Masha.
