About this ebook

Elyot, Keani and Alextra escaped the ancient monster at the heart of the catacombs under the city. But the Commonwealth enforcers launch search shuttles, and the side of the mountain offers no cover. The city above? No longer a safe haven for them. But below lies impenetrable jungle, stretching to the horizon in all directions. Keani loathes the idea of facing its many dangers. But she loathes the idea of abandoning her new friends even more. She fails to talk them out of it, but soon enough they will know just why facing squads of enforcers struck her as the better plan. "In the Jungle of a Thousand Easy Deaths" is the third episode in the ongoing monthly science fiction adventure serial TALES OF THE CHAI MAKHANI TRIO.

THE JUNGLE OF A THOUSAND EASY DEATHS

Elyot's arms and legs were trembling with the effort to keep climbing down the steep side of the mountain. Sweat from his brow pooled at the corners of his mouth. As much as he tried, he couldn't get enough breath through his nose, and when he opened his mouth, those drops of sweat would coat his tongue. The saltiness of it made him all too aware of just how thirsty he was.

The dehydration was making his muscles ache, a different kind of ache than the constant climbing. Until that day, he had no idea it was possible to be so tired that you just hurt.

His fingertips slipped over a handhold, sending scurries of pebbles raining down in mini-avalanches he could only hope weren't hitting Alextra beneath him.

She had disappeared from his sight entirely the moment she had passed the treeline. The sun was nearly gone from the sky, and he didn't know how they were going to keep moving through the jungle in the full dark of night.

He didn't know lots of things, now that he had left the city that had been his entire world since he was born.

But he was a fast learner.

The soft hum of a shuttle engine he had been tuning out started growing louder, but the way it echoed off of the rocks around him, he couldn't tell from which direction it was coming. He looked up at the purple sky and could just make out the outline of Keani almost on top of him. She saw him looking up and waved for
