    Inevitable - Tawnya Jenkins

    Prologue

A thick layer of clouds cascaded the skies, covering the twinkle of the stars and the glow of the moon. There was an icy chill in the air as the rain flooded down and soaked into the Earth beneath him, Ethan loved nights like this. It was nights like tonight that coerced the demons and other evil creatures from their hiding spots, and begged them to toy with human souls. Yes, tonight would be a busy night and he relished in the thought of it. He sat perched atop the tall building observing the humans below. He watched as they scampered about, running for cover like the simple drops from Heaven would melt them.

Ethan spotted a demon within seconds, lurking in the shadows below a dimly lit street lamp, stalking a young man, he was ready to attack when something caught his attention, a woman. A young woman in a yellow dress twirling about, sticking out her tongue, letting the drops of water trickle into her mouth. She was breathtaking, her dress soaked, clinging to every curve of her perfect body, her hair drenched and lying in messy ringlets on her face. She appeared so carefree, so full of life, not like the other humans running away from the natural wonder falling around them.

Sitting up straighter he pressed his body closer to the building, making sure not to be seen as he studied the girl closely. Ethan didn’t move, he followed her, taking in her every feature until he saw it. The creature that approached from the woods behind the parking lot. The creature he knew was a Hell hound, he fought them many times, but what was this one doing here? Stalking this beautiful, innocent woman?

Ethan drew his sword, preparing to swoop down and kill the beast before it even got near her, but the woman had noticed the hound and had now started running. Shit, he thought waiting for a moment, knowing that her Guardian would come at any second and save this woman.

Ethan waited patiently until he couldn’t stand it anymore. Plummeting down like a bullet, he slammed into the foul beast, crushing them both into the ground, the Earth shook from the sheer force of the impact. The woman screamed and fell backwards into the mud, her feet struggling to push her upright. The hound glared at him, snapping its jaws but Ethan was too quick and moved with ease. This beast was no match for him, he could defeat it in his sleep, but for some reason he felt the need to show off for this human. He pretended to put up a struggle then with one hand latched onto the hound’s jaw, pulling its head free from its body. The hound thrashed about for a few seconds before disintegrating into ash, with no trace of its existence.

He approached the woman with caution, seeing the obvious fear in her eyes, his glorious white wings gently folded behind him and disappeared into his back. She was sobbing now, still struggling to stand but her feet not able to grip in the slippery mud beneath them.

He reached his hand out to help her up, It's ok, you’re safe now, please don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you.

The woman looked up at him she had the most beautiful set of green eyes he’s ever seen. His breath caught in his throat for a moment as he took her in, her hand was shaking as she reached out and placed it cautiously in his. Ethan felt an instant jolt shoot through his body as her skin touched his, it was as if he had just been struck by lightning, the sensation of it nearly brought him to his knees.

What the- he started to say.

You’re a-a umm, that thing, and you-you, she stammered.

He chuckled, watching her try to form a sentence and then he decided to help her out, "Yes, I’m an Angel and that thing is gone, you’re safe," he smiled at her.

Their eyes met, gazing at each other for what felt like an eternity, her soul was the most perfect soul he had ever laid eyes on. ‘Mine’ his soul rumbled from within, he could gaze into those eyes forever and be perfectly content. Something tugged on his hand, as he glanced down he realized he still held the woman's hand in his, and she was trying to gently pull it free. Once her hand was free from his grasp he felt a sudden emptiness, like a part of him had just been lost. He didn’t understand this feeling, it was nothing he had felt before, he watched the woman reach up and tuck a strand of her red hair behind her ear.

    What’s your name? He asked.

She pulled nervously at the hem of her shirt, Umm…I’m Kaitlin, this-this is a dream right? Or some crazy nightmare because of that stupid movie I watched last night, right?

He was about to tell her she wasn’t dreaming when a figure came running up behind her out of the shadows, it was a man, and he was shouting her name. Kaitlin turned toward the man, and Ethan tensed up, preparing to fight who or whatever was approaching them, but, when the man got close enough to see he couldn’t believe his eyes.

Katy! Baby, oh my -, are you ok? What are you doing out here in the rain in the middle of the night, you could catch a cold. The man said.

Ethan tensed as his half-brother, Jase, came into view. He watched Jase remove his jacket and wrap it around Kaitlin, purposely keeping his arms secured around her.

Jase, what are you doing here? She asked. She reached up and planted a soft kiss on his lips, something shot through Ethan, something he had not felt before, it was as if his whole body was set on fire.

This is some crazy dream huh? She laughed.

You are trying to protect her from me? I just saved her life! Ethan spat out.

Jase glanced up at Ethan and carefully pulled Kaitlin behind him, Ethan tensed up.

What are you doing here? Jase asked.

Kaitlin peeked her head around Jase’s arm, You two know each other? She asked quietly.

I’m Ethan, Jase is my brother, he answered and looked back at his brother.

You are not a Guardian, what are you doing with her? Ethan asked.

Neither are you, so I’m going to ask you again, what are you doing here? With my girl? Jase said.

Ethan jerked his head up, had he heard his brother correctly? His girl? No, Kaitlin was his and he would make sure his brother knew that.

"Kaitlin, he emphasized, was in danger and I was simply saving her from the Hellhound that nearly ripped her to shreds," he finished proudly.

Oh my gosh, this is the best dream ever! She laughed.

Jase glared at Ethan, his charcoal wings suddenly emerged from his back, he swooped Kaitlin up in his arms, pulled a small blue glowing ball from his pocket.

Before he disappeared he shouted, Stay away from her!

Ethan lunged forward but they were gone, vanished into thin air. How did he do that? Ethan stood there staring at the empty space before him, feeling like a huge hole was now left inside him. He vowed then and there to make it his mission to find them, to find his soul mate.

    A Strange Encounter

I dream of him every night. His smile, his infectious laugh, his piercing blue eyes. I don’t know his name or even where he takes me, but I know I’m drawn to him. He calls to me, I am the moth and he is my beacon. I don’t understand the purpose of our encounters, but I know the emptiness I feel when I am forced to wake up. Leaving him has become my greatest sorrow.

Beep…Beep…Beep! Kaitlin is abruptly pulled from another blissful encounter. Eyes squinting, trying to avoid the invading sunlight, she focuses her attention across the room where her roommate Emily lay, still asleep. Ugh! picking up her slipper, she hurls it at Emily’s still sleeping face.

What the… Emily jumps up, Ok, Ok I’m up, she slammed her hand down on the alarm, finally silencing the torturous noise.

Thank you, Kaitlin mumbled, as she fell back onto her bed.

You know, getting up early wouldn’t be so hard for you if you wouldn’t stay out so late with that gorgeous boy toy of yours. Emily pointed out as she walked cheerfully toward the bathroom.

Jealous! She shouted, allowing the guilt of her dream to fully sink in.

Oh Abso-freakin-lutly I am, she responded, her voice now muffled from rushing water of the shower. Jase is hot, most of the females on campus think so as well, luckily Kaitlin has learned to deal with it. It took her awhile to get used to all the attention the female student body gave him. Now she doesn’t look twice when they saunter up to him and flirt, she knows he’s hers and he wouldn’t have it any other way. From the first moment she met him she knew he was the one for her. She had just arrived in town and had stopped at the local Stop U Save to ask for directions to the University. Her breath had caught in her throat the moment the bell chimed and he entered the building. His eyes burned into hers with an intensity she had never experienced before. At first the whole thing made her uneasy but then it was like how he stared at her just felt right. They have been inseparable ever since.

When Emily emerged from the bathroom, steam wafting out around her, Kaitlin found herself observing her roommate as she walked into the closet. Emily was gorgeous, in that cheerleader sort of way. Her tanned, slender body was nearly perfect and what woman wouldn’t want her natural blonde hair and perky breasts. Kaitlin pulled the covers up tighter around herself, trying to cover her less than perfect body. Her lack of self-confidence has always been an issue for her, no matter how many times she’s been told she’s gorgeous.

Emily and Kaitlin had become best friends ever since their first day of college two years ago. The school had assigned everyone’s roommates at random and while they were complete opposites, somehow it worked. Kaitlin was so thankful for her luck, she loved Emily and couldn’t imagine life without her. Emily was always so full of positive energy that it radiated off her. She was the life of every party and she loved it. Kaitlin was more of the stay inside with a good book kind of girl.

Hello, earth to Kaitlin, did you hear me? Emily questioned, now standing at the foot of the bed.

Huh, what? She responded shaking her head.

Emily laughed, I said what do you think? Red or Black? She asked switching two shirts back and forth in front of herself.

Oh um the red one, she smiled feeling a little embarrassed. She reached over and grabbed the TV remote from the nightstand and started flipping through the channels.

I thought you had English Lit. on Tuesdays, don’t you normally wear sweats to that class and sleep in the back? she asked.

Emily sat down on her bed, pulling on a pair of black boots over her skinny jeans. "I do, and I did until the new guy started last week," Emily smiled.

So I take it he’s a hottie? Kaitlin asked with a smile.

Oh hot doesn’t even begin to describe him, he could totally be Channing Tatum’s stunt double.

Mmm Channing Tatum, she thought as she laughed, You’re hooked already aren’t you?

    Yes! Emily exclaimed.

Emily was a little too enthusiastic for 6am, but that’s one of the things Kaitlin loved about her. Emily jumped up and threw the slipper back at Kaitlin’s face.

Wish me luck, she said as she grabbed her backpack and walked out the door.

Ugh, finally, Kaitlin thought as she curled up in her covers and tried to go back to sleep. She was nearly asleep when she decided she should seize this opportunity to text Jase. He’s always the first one to text in the morning, since obviously she’s not a morning person. Her fingers itched with excitement knowing she was going to surprise him.

Kaitlin: Good morning sexy I miss you

She sent the text and plopped back down, hoping sleep would find her easily. It wasn’t long before she was fast asleep and the mystery man called to her again. He appeared this time in a beautiful meadow with clouds filling the sky above them. The grass below her feet was the greenest she’s ever seen and it was like Heaven between her toes. She found herself squishing the emerald blades between her toes, until she noticed he was now right in front of her. She looked up to find his face still hidden with a blinding light, she had hope that one day when she looked up she would finally see his face. She knew he was stunning, with the few features she was able to see, he still managed to take her breath away.

Nothing exciting ever happens during their encounters, they just sit in silence but it never seems long enough for her. He makes her feel complete, happy, but a little guilty knowing that she’s with Jase. She constantly reminds herself it’s just a dream, something she can’t help, which makes her feel a little better. The muffled sound of a Bryan Adams song pulls her back to reality, and she realizes that Jase must have texted her, sadly she comes back to reality.

Jase: It is now, good morning beautiful I see you beat me today, it must be the start of the apocalypse lol

    :-p

She laughed, imagining him sticking his tongue out at her and how badly she’d want to kiss it if he did. Throwing off her covers she decided to just jump in the shower and start her day since according to the clock it was now 8:45am. Halfway done with her shower she remembered she had told Shawn that she would cover his shift today, which started at 10am. Shit! she mumbled and kicked it into overdrive to get ready. Once in her Java Beans uniform she grabbed her phone to text Jase.

Kaitlin: Forgot to tell you last night I’m working Shawn’s shift today so I won’t see you until after 6pm love you.

Tossing the phone into her bag she finished putting on her shoes and was about to walk out the door when Jase responded.

Jase: Wish you would’ve told me sooner.

Kaitlin: that would be where the forgot part comes in silly ttyl.

    Coffee Break

Java Beans was fairly quiet, most students had early morning classes and had already started before they opened. She loved her job, it was a small little coffee shop with not more than six tables. The walls were a soft chocolate brown with a beautiful cream border. The floors were a soft bronze color that had a shimmering accent, it was a quant but lovely spot. Twenty minutes into her shift the door chimed and in walked Jase’s best friend, Eric, dressed in his Java Beans uniform. Eric is supposed to be off today, she knew that because the three of them always worked the same shift.

What are you doing here? She questioned, as she continued to wipe down the counter. Eric walked toward her with a smirk and blew her a kiss as he adjusted his apron.

What do you mean, I work here Princess, remember? He smiled.

Eric walked up to the counter and hopped over it, clearing it like it was nothing. Shaking her head she just smiled at him, Eric was undeniably good-looking, nothing like her Jase was of course, but he sure didn’t have any problem picking up women. With his 6’ft height, all muscle build and beautiful dark skin, not to mention the pair of sexy green bedroom eyes that made most women melt.

"Of course I remember you work here smartass, I just meant, why are you here today? You’re off today," She replied.

Well I could say the same thing about you now couldn’t I Princess? He started cleaning the espresso machine.

She hated that nickname. It had started the first day they met, he told her she was fragile and beautiful just like a Princess.

Stop avoiding my question, and stop calling me Princess. Why are you here today Eric, did Jase send you? She asked.

Eric sighed and shook his head, Relax, can’t a guy just need some extra money, he winked, and you are a Princess, thus the name shall remain, he reached over and kissed her hand.

She laughed and relaxed a little, Ugh, you’re impossible. A few hours and customers later, a man walked in. He was average height, dressed in black jeans and a red flannel shirt. His face was covered in stubble, it appeared he was either growing a beard or simply hadn’t shaved
