The fortress was larger than Isabella first thought. She stopped and looked back down the long flight of stone-hewn stairs that led from where she had just come, where her Uncle Jayme was being kept prisoner. Darkness winked back at her like a sadistic master. She shivered, unable to fathom how her uncle was keeping his sanity.

The guards left her, apparently unworried that she would escape from the stronghold set on an island; an island surrounded by waters that held unfathomable deadly creatures in its depths.

She wandered for a while, gathering her thoughts and letting the surprisingly refreshing breezes wafting in through the open windows calm her jangled nerves.
