    Intro

Millennium Art Academy is a high school located in The Bronx, New York. It is a public school that is accessible to many children in the Bronx. Millennium Art Academy is an art school that allows kids to express themselves as well as their creativity. Millennium Art Academy first became a school in September 2003. This school features grades 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and a special education program. There are approximately 100 students per grade, which amounts to roughly about 400 students schoolwide.

MAA offers a program called the Millennium Pearl Initiative, where two generations come together to tell a story about perspectives, experiences, and life throughout the years. This program helps students engage and participate in community-building activities to get a better understanding of others’ lives.

Thanks to our school administration, teachers, staff members, and our wonderful partners at R.A.I.N and Bronx Bound Books for making this experience possible. They have encouraged us to step out of our comfort zone and make powerful memories. We feel extremely fortunate to have made connections with our elders and to have had the privilege of telling another person’s story. In this book, you will read about the interviews we conducted and the lessons we learned in those moments we spent together with our elders.

    Let’s Start With Storytelling

    Question:

Why do you think it is so important

to engage in storytelling and tell the tale of other people?

    Answers

    Ideanna Isaac:

I think it is so important to engage in storytelling because not only are you broadcasting this person’s strength or message that they learned from life, but you’re also saying it to an audience who might relate to your experience and hearing a story someone can relate to gives a sense of encouragement and empowers other people.
