Gerald Earnst loved old books. He loved their smell. The feel of old leather covers. The slickness of dust jackets. He even didn’t mind paperbacks, both the trade and mass-market size.
He just loved books. Period.
His few friends called him pathological about books. He knew he was. He didn’t care.
Ten years ago, he and his wonderful wife, Bettie, had bought a house on Bryant Street. A simple, three bedroom with two baths. They both loved books and had actually met in a bookstore in the mystery section.
She worked in a local bank as an assistant manager and he worked as an architect in an office just four blocks away from Bettie. Every day they met for lunch, usually just
