About this ebook

Read about one woman’s true encounter with the paranormal. Like most people Lisa Gellers never believed in ghosts or hauntings. But all that changed when she moved into her first apartment. It wasn’t long before strange things began to happen: objects moving on their own, things disappearing, disembodied voices, and a dark shadow that followed her wherever she went. Now a true believer in the paranormal, Lisa has decided to share her story. For any who have suffered from a real haunting, hopefully this will provide you some comfort and the knowledge that you are not alone.

Having lived in a couple haunted houses I can completely sympathize with the writer. Fortunately mine were just ghosts and not evil entities. Definitely not a place I would ever want to live. But a really good book. The honesty and fear of the writer were on each page. Thank you for sharing your story. Very good book.

Introduction

Like me, you have probably heard about people who have supposedly lived in a haunted house. They talk about things that went bump in the night and how their lives had become a living nightmare. I am certain that you, like others, have thought that it was just a story, or that the people involved made it all up. I used to believe the same. I remember how as a child, I loved listening to ghost stories around Halloween, or when a bunch of my friends and I got together. I always thought that ghost stories were just that: stories. I couldn’t have been more wrong; and I was about to find out how wrong I was.

You may call me Lisa. I have published this book under a pseudonym because I do not need people making fun of me, or harassing me at work about what I write within these pages. The names of the people mentioned have been changed as well to protect their identities, or because they requested it.

The story about my haunted apartment and the two and a half years I spent there is true. These are real events that I am sharing because people need to know that ghosts are real. Some are benign and harmless, but others, like what I encountered, are malicious. If you scoff at this, that is your choice. I once laughed at the thought of real ghosts. I never will again.

It was the end of 2004. I was two months away from my twenty-first birthday and in my third year of college, pursuing my degree in history. I lived in Aberdeen, South Dakota at the time, attending the local university. I had lived at home to cut down on the cost of college and for the free room and board, but my mother had been recently transferred by her job and had to move to the east coast. This of course left me without a place to live. I had no desire to move into the dorms at the college. Sharing a small 12 x 12 space with another student surrounded by freshmen and sophomores did not appeal to me. I like having my own space. So, I started apartment hunting. Being a college town there were usually a few places available for rent, and since the semester was ending, I knew I could find something.

So, I circled ads in the newspaper and started hitting the streets. Being December, it was cold—and I mean the frigid, sub-zero temperature cold, typical of South Dakota—and there were only a handful of recently vacated apartments. Most seniors from the university graduated in May not December, but I had to find a place. I only had a few weeks to move out of my parent’s house.

The first apartment I looked at was above a bridal shop. It was nice, but undergoing renovations and the ceiling hung really low, making it difficult to walk without hitting my head. The rent was reasonable, but the renovations meant it wouldn’t be ready until after I had to be moved in. So, I thanked the man and walked away.

The second place I looked at was in a guy’s basement. It was roomy and had its own kitchen, but it belonged in the basement of a man who had just been divorced and had custody of his two children. Also, the door to the basement had no lock, so we would be more like roommates. Though I could have grown accustomed to such an arrangement, my mother was not thrilled. In the end, I thanked the man, but told him that, under the circumstances, it would be unwise for me to rent it.

The third place was in a renovated mansion that, rumor had it, had once been the mayor’s house in years’ past. The place was dump. Lights hung limply from the fixtures and the ceiling tiles looked as though they would fall on your head at any moment. The unit had a kitchen the size of my couch and windows I couldn’t even open. This explained why the rent was $200 a month, including utilities. I just didn’t feel safe there so I left and never looked back.

I went to the fourth and final apartment advertised in the paper. It was a basement flat in a four-plex on a quiet road. It was also only a few blocks from the college, so I could walk on the days my car decided to breakdown. I had one of those junkers that ran when it felt like it; a real pain in the rear during the winter. A four-plex is a building—this one had once been a house—that has been turned into four apartments. The one I looked at had two apartments on the main floor and two apartments in the basement with a shared laundry area in the basement as well. What ended up being my apartment was the one in the basement on the right of the main stairwell.

Anyway, being the only one left on my list to look at, I contacted the manager and set up a time to meet. Initially, when I saw it, I thought it was a cozy little place. It was a one bedroom apartment with a tiny bathroom, but only I would be living there and it had a door I could lock. The door opened up in the kitchen, which was spacious and had room for a table and roll about cart. A tiny hallway on the left led from the kitchen to the bedroom and living room.
