#1 I had a passion for walking, and I would spend hours exploring the hills around me. I would always go north first, to see the beautiful mountain of Ben Lomond.
#2 I had a love of walking, and I would often go to the Ben and its island-patterned Loch. I would turn to the north first when I got to the top of Carman Hill, and I would always return to the Ben.
#3 I could see the Leven River down below me, and I could see five towns that it passed through: Balloch, Bonhill, Jamestown, Alexandria, and Dumbarton. I imagined my father in one of these towns, dyeing bales of cloth hour after hour.
#4 The town of Alexandria was named after Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Smollett, Member of Parliament for Dunbartonshire in the late eighteenth century. The Smollett family was famous for novelist Tobias Smollett.

My mother was addicted to the pictures, and she would take me with her twice a week to see them. I got the habit badly and it stuck. I would sit through just about anything, an escape into romance and fantasy for me.
#6
Mary Johnston Luke, who was known as Vallance, was orphaned at ten, and was sent to Quarriers Home in Bridge of Weir, south-west of Glasgow. She was in contact with Whooping Cough and was just discharged from the Observation House, South York Street.
#7
I knew America better than Scotland, because I went to the movies frequently. The America I saw on the screen at the Strand was the picture house in Bank Street, which had a particular memory for me. I saw The Jolson Story there, and I remember seeing it because the event is attached to an electrifying memory.
#8
I was always excited to go to the movies, and I would often take trips there by myself. I was always excited to join a children’s pipe band, but my father took me to register for it the next week.
#9
The movies had a significant impact on me. They increased a tendency to watch myself play a role rather than unselfconsciously get on with my life, and they instilled a sense that authentic life was a drama packed with struggle against adversity.
