    #1

Lee’s designer eye was evident the first time we met Princess Radziwill in 2014 in her Manhattan apartment on East 72nd Street. She had never had a place that didn’t have great light, and she was always careful about clutter.

    #2

Lee has always been attracted to French culture, and she has spent most of her life exileing herself from the Kennedys and their mystique. She has retreated into her own exile.

    #3

After their parents’ divorce, Jackie and Lee found a new life with Hugh D. Auchincloss and his family at Merrywood, a stately Georgian house and terraced gardens overlooking the Potomac Palisades in McLean, Virginia. They summered at Hammersmith Farm, Auchincloss’s sprawling, wooded estate in Newport, Rhode Island.

    Insights from Chapter 2

    #1

Lee’s childhood was filled with joy and excitement. She and her sister, Jackie, were born in 1929, and they spent their summers at their family estate in East Hampton. They were bred to dazzle.

    #2

Jackie, the younger sister, was awarded prizes on her horse, Danseuse, from an early age. Lee, the older sister, was often afraid of horses after an early mishap.

    #3

Jackie and Lee were raised by snobs, and they both loved books. They were extremely close, but they also competed with each other.

    #4

Jackie was often compared to her father, Black Jack Bouvier, because of her masculine hands and feet. Janet, on the other hand, was high-strung and quick to anger. They had a enchanting childhood, though, as Jackie remembered an early memory of her parents coming into her bedroom all dressed up to go out dancing.

    #5

After their parents’ divorce, the sisters became even closer. Jackie found solace in her books and riding her horse, Danseuse, which her Bouvier grandfather had boarded for her in Central Park after divorced Janet had decamped with her girls to 1 Gracie Square.

    #6

Jackie and Lee were no longer the center of Janet’s attention. They were the poor relations
