In 1959, writer Max Shulman appeared as a guest panelist on the TV game show What’s My Line. He was introduced by Arlene Francis as the author of the book that was the basis for the Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward movie Rally ’Round the Flag, Boys! (1958), and as the writer for the new TV series The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, based on Shulman’s 1951 best-selling book of the same name.
Describing his brand of humor, Shulman once said, “Life was bitter, but I was not.” So, as teenager Dobie Gillis continually beautiful girl), he may occasionally lose hope, but he always rebounds with a new scheme.
