The Lite Prepper - Planning for the Next Crisis - S.M. Mitchell
Introduction
The Beginning
This all started for me, the first time, after watching The Walking Dead. I got nervous, as the show demonstrated just how unprepared I was (as most people are) for an emergency. I joked with others that I was prepping for a zombie apocalypse. Was I really? Well, not completely. I was prepping for any kind of emergency, really.
I started prepping to help ensure that my son and I were safe and had everything we needed. You see, I have gone without. I have been hungry. I grew up very poor and we went without quite often. I have felt the pangs of hunger. I never want myself or my son to ever feel that again. I am the only thing standing between us and devastation. It is my responsibility to take care of my family.
This started back in about 2014. From 2014 to the beginning of 2018 I had built up about a six-month supply of food and water, along with other necessities. I had even started to teach myself a bit of gardening by growing some vegetables in containers. Nothing drastic, but I did have the fever. I liked the feeling of being prepared. I had even bigger plans that I was concocting. But, life got in the way and I had to sell my house to move for a job. I knew that we would be moving from a 2000 sq ft house in the suburbs, with about ¼ acre, to a small apartment. So, in the few months between planning the move and selling the house, we ate, drank, used, and gave away most of our supplies. Although disappointing, it was necessary as it turns out, we are in a small apartment now, and there is no way we could have fit all of that in here.
One might think that my first attempt at prepping was a waste of time since I had to eat/use/drink/give away of most of my supplies when there wasn’t an emergency. Not at all. I learned a lot during that time, and since. For example:
(1) I learned what types of food I like, and what I don’t. This will help me better plan my food supplies in the future, so we are not stocking up on foods that we will hate and could potentially waste.
(2) I did a lot
