Chapter One
Routine Trip to Work
Wayne has a typical normal life as an IT specialist at Datacram, where he spends his days and some evenings going over customer accounting data and making sure it’s accurate. He has done alright for himself over the years. A college graduate at 21 in 1985 and having worked multiple jobs for 5 years before getting the IT job two years ago, he rents a townhouse a few miles outside of town. He only has a rather enjoyable 20-minute commute to work. Wayne dislikes anything that inconveniences him
outside his normal planning, which he manages well. To Wayne’s thinking point a to point b
is the best way possible. He does not have any close friends nor has any interest in sports or hobbies; just work and learning computers. But today, outside forces are changing his life, and a hard choice will be forced upon him.
Today is Wednesday at 7 am, and Wayne is getting ready for work. He gets out his tan color corduroy pants and white polo shirt that he wears every day. But today is a little different. He gets to start his work day with the Butler account. That’s the company that hired Datacram to put all its paper information onto a computer disc, and Wayne’s boss Gary put him in charge of the task. Wayne looks at himself in the mirror with his black swept hair in need of a haircut and bushy mustache that needs a trim. Perhaps an appointment soon,
he said to himself.
Hmmm, lost a little more weight.
Wayne has a bad eating habit and only eats when he really gets hungry. Thus, he is only a thin 150 pounds. After getting dressed, he goes down the hardwood stairs and passes the black-and-white photo that hangs perfectly on the wall. It is of him with three people on graduation day in front of a large building, and he glances at it like he does every day as he heads off to work.
Wayne doesn’t care for the watery convenience store brew, so he grabs the coffee he makes every morning and walks down the hallway, picks up his car keys off the end table, and goes outside to greet a nice warm summer morning. He gets into his faded blue Dodge K car that has a red left fender that was replaced by the former owner. It starts and runs, insurance is cheap, and that’s alright with him. He does not want to bring any undue attention to himself, so he doesn’t mind this car. He starts his commute, which has three stop lights and two stop signs to go through before turning into the parking lot. Traffic was good today, so he was happy to have made it to work in only 17 minutes.
As his co-workers are coming into work, he observes the typical
ones; the ones that are late, rushing in, and running fast as they push by him. He leisurely strides across the parking lot onto the sidewalk and into the large, covered entrance which is half round and has a water fountain off to the side that is always running. He goes through the doors and off to the right toward the elevators. Wayne waits patiently, as he always does, for someone else to press the door button. When the doors open, he slips in and waits for someone to push the button to the 3rd floor of the five-story building. A paper bag rips open, a gooey lunch falls out onto the floor, and an elevator passenger mumbles.
Damn it!
The guy reaches to pick it up.
The doors open, and they all scurry out. Wayne does not pay any attention to the guy hurrying to clean up his mess. "Not my problem," he thinks to himself. He goes over to the open room with small dividers forming cubicles designed so people can stay focused on their work. Yet with all the large windows around the three corners that people can look out from, he always thought that environment to be counterproductive. He sits down in his soft office chair, turns on the computer, and waits.
And he waits. Other co-workers are doing their morning routine of eating donuts, drinking coffee, and talking about whatever went on last night. Wayne never really pays attention to all the conversations. Some, he wishes he did not hear. "All the unnecessary small talk," he thinks as others talk about company gossip. Now, he does not want to hear anything, so he goes through the computer to make sure all his work is done and he is ready for the Butler account. An hour goes by and Wayne can’t stand it anymore with no word. He goes over to the elevator door.
Where are you going?
asked Dan.
Well, I’m going to Gary. The Butler reports should have been on my desk already,
Dan gives him a puzzled look. Didn’t you hear? We lost that account last night. Something about the cost was wrong.
Wayne stood still, not knowing what to do. He was prepared to tackle this; the first big job he got with Datacram.
