We're born, and we die. It is whilst we are living that we have the opportunity to make our mark(s). A commentary on this unique human experience, Patterns in the Sand is a beautifully crafted collection of poems themed as a meditation on love and hate. It is a delightful but at times dark journey through human emotion. Delving into history and drawing from contemporary sources, Noscere's clever use of poetic devices forces you to reflect upon the very extremes of human nature, how they have changed through time and how, sadly, and why we are destined to repeat the same behaviours despite the consequences.

One of the fifteen poems within the collection, the eponymous Patterns in the sand uses the mandala as a metaphor for life, that temporary experience between the moments of birth and death. In living our lives, we make our mark(s) upon the world. It's human nature to want to be remembered, to have mattered somehow, to someone, for our life to have meant something.

Not all of us can or will make a meaningful contribution to society, be it a body of work, science or industry, perhaps academically or politically. This concept can be depressing, the fear that we haven't mattered to something, or someone. However everyone will have interactions with other people, be they family and friends, colleagues, or the random stranger passing in the street. We hope that at least some of those interactions will be meaningful enough to be remembered.

... Remembered by the people we meet, and the works we produce. The digital age notwithstanding, these marks we make are washed away by the passage of time, eventually, just as marks upon the sand through time are washed away by the tides.

In this sense, the poems in the collection—whether snapshots in time, capturing the human experience, or glimpsing at aspects of human nature relating to love and hate—are all marks in the sand, waiting to be washed away by the tide. Some marks cut so deep that they may never be washed away.
