About this ebook
David P. Carlson
Originally I was born in Dearborn Michigan, but somehow at the age of two, I found myself in Beeville, Texas where I was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. P.O. Carlson who I might add are two of the finest people ever. They gave me love and a wonderful Christian up-bringing. As I look back over the years gone by, I see their guiding ways that allowed me to learn a trade, raise my family and pursue a passion for writing poems and songs, singing and recording songs and forever giving praise to my Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST who truly made my life as it is today possible. My wife Linda and I want to thank all the good folks in Beeville that helped me along the way. My hope is that this story, poem and songs will give a sense of peace and hope to all that reads these words.

Introduction
What are you hiding from yourself? Why de we find ourselves disproportionately angry with the selfishness of a friend, the laziness of a coworker, the arrogance of a family member—or even the rudeness of a stranger? Why do the same old things get to us so easily, and so intensely? Our same old things,
David Carlson explains, are clues to the emotions and traits that we fear most in ourselves.
Here he shows that it is possible to acknowledge and accept our so-called weaknesses-and that in fact, these qualities may prove to be important, hidden strengths. Perhaps a touch of laziness
is just what the workaholic needs; perhaps some judicious selfishness
can save us from exhaustion and resentment. Through the illuminating stories and poetry By David Carlson shows us how to reconcile our darker impulses, find the gifts they offer—and reclaim our wholeness once again. David Carlson guides us past the self-punishing patterns that often bind us.

Foreword
I did not feel good about myself as a kid. In fact, there were times when I really hated being me. I thought I was the only one in the world who was so inept, so unable to make friends, and so ridiculed by the boyhood fraternity which I desperately-and fruitlessly sought to join.
Not much changed when I became a young adult. Oh I thought I was going to strike out a new course. I even moved to to a new city, where nobody knew me. Well I found that moving didn’t help. I had taken myself with me.
Then one day I found myself listening to the words of a preacher. That preacher preached of a love supreme. He said something-1 will never forget.
All of your so called faults, all the things which you don’t like about youself are your greatest assets,
He said. They are simply overamplified. The volume has been turned up a bit too much, that
s all. Just turn down the volume a little. Soon, you-and everyone else-will see your weakness as your strengths, your ‘negatives’ as you ‘positives.’ They will become wonderful tools, ready to work for you rather then against you. All you have to do is learn to call on these personality traits in amounts that are appropriate to the moment. Judge how much of your wonderful qualities are needed, and don’t give any more then that. "
I realized then that all of these aspects of my being were qualities for which I
