Our Tips for Writing a Performance Evaluation
When you are writing a performance evaluation, there are a few things you should keep in mind in order to make it as effective as possible. First, always be specific when giving feedback. This way, your employees will know exactly what they need to work on.
Second, try to use positive language as much as possible. Instead of saying, You need to work on your communication skills,
try something like, Your ability to communicate effectively is an asset to the team.
Third, avoid using generalities. Instead of making a statement like, You're a hard worker,
give specific examples of times when the employee went above and beyond expectations.
Finally, remember that the goal of a performance evaluation is to help employees improve their performance. With this in mind, be sure to provide constructive criticism that will actually be helpful. Simply pointing out areas of improvement is not enough – you need to give specific suggestions on how the employee can make changes.
By following these tips, you can write performance evaluations that are both accurate and helpful. And, by using positive performance appraisal phrases, you can make sure that your employees are motivated to continue doing their best.
Starting points for positive language could be:
1. You did a great job of…
2. Your performance in ... is outstanding.
3. You have improved greatly in…
4. I am very pleased with your performance in…
5. You have made significant progress in…
6. Your efforts in this area are commendable.
7. I appreciate your hard work in…
8. You have gone above and beyond expectations in…
9. Thank you for your dedication to…
10. I am impressed with your commitment to…
11. You have made excellent progress in…
12. Your performance is much improved from…
