Prologue
SHUT UP!
SHU-U-U-U-U-T-T …. U-U-U-P-P!!!
STUPID DOG!
I lift my mobile phone from the bedside table. Eyes strain as they try to see what time it is. Eyes squint from the screen light.
2:14 AM!
The dog does not stop barking. Hide under my pillow, cover my ears. I am meeting with an important client in a few hours, and looking tired, with puffy eyes, will most definitely not enhance my professional image.
Silence! At last!
Drowse off….
CLANG!... Cling...Cling...Cling…cling...cling
Eyes wide shut... Focus… listen… that was in the house…
Gun… flashlight…
Where are the kids?
Walk downstairs… flashlight off… carefully contemplating each step...
The curtain in the lounge is bulging in the wind... but I closed it… I did.
Someone is in the house…

YOUR LACK OF AWARENESS MAY GET YOU KILLED!
Learn how Not to be a Victim…
REMEMBER: No crime can commence if the opportunity therefore does not exist.
In this book, we look at how crime affects us and what we can do as individuals to lessen our chances of falling victim to crime.
The research in this book is based on the study of criminal, as well as victim behaviour, in a country ranking 3rd in the world with most violent crimes. As a law enforcement, tactical, and private security professional trainer, I train instructors on international levels and was invited as guest presenter at International Annual Training Conferences for Law Enforcement Instructors. Apart from that, I study people and behaviour. And with a qualification in Forensic Psychology, qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Practitioner, Ordained Life Coach Minister, and a Doctor’s Degree in Theology, I get to study people and behaviour on a regular basis. I mainly focus on PTSD and victimology, the aftermath of crime, but it is even more important to focus on the prevention of crime. By this, I mean preventing from becoming a victim in the first place. Because by doing that, you will not have to go to extreme physical measures of self-defence.
Situational Awareness…
The latest buzz word in the self-defence arena.
It teaches you to be aware of your surroundings, and the steps of awareness so that you do not get caught by surprise and feel paralyzed when the guy suddenly appears in front of you.
The problem is that it helps just diddly squat if you do not know what to look for.
So, what do potential criminals look like?
How do they think?
(Yes, from a Criminal Psychology point of view, I can bore you with endless white papers on the poor attacker, and how he comes from a background of abuse, poor neighbourhood, alcoholic parents, and current joblessness.)
But that is NOT what you want to know, is it?
Right now, you do not care where he comes from, or who his father was. You do not care whether he lost his job recently or has sick family members at home.
Your stuff is your stuff!
You worked hard, very hard, to accumulate all your stuff. You do not intend to give it all away to someone who just pops in for a quick, uninvited visit in the wee hours of the morning, to relieve you from the burden of your plasma TV.
Welcoming someone in your home at 3AM who entered through the window, is not on top of the friendliness list. Afterall, they almost never give you time to brush your teeth or gargle mouthwash before you greet them. Morning breath! Ughh!
Chapter 1
Why do people commit crimes?
Why do people commit crimes?
Why do people commit crimes regardless of the consequences?
Do they think of the benefits and risks?
Why do others never commit a crime?
Before we get to the how
, I will provide you with a brief overview from a Forensic Psychology point of view. Don’t worry, I will not use Shakespeare English
and big words. If we have a basic understanding of why crimes are committed, we can predict possible rise in crime, or prepare better to prevent it.
This chapter is not about the felon’s past, or upbringing, or abusive parents, or poor neighbourhood. This is about factors and motivators that encourage people to commit crime.
Here are some motivators:
Greed, Anger, Jealousy, Revenge, Pride
While some consider it better than a regular job:
Greater rewards
Excitement
Admiration
Adrenalin rush
Desire for material gain
Some crimes are spur of the moment:
Control
Revenge
Power
Planning:
Other crimes take a lot more planning and precision, like bank robberies.
Here are some factors that influence crime:
Poverty level and job availability
Your family must eat, right? What would you do to feed your family?
Social Morality Level
Individual morality
This forms the foundation of decisions of and judgments by the individual: honesty, loyalty, good faith, and responsibility
Social morality
Fairness helps to govern society and to control individual behaviour. Social morality considers whether an action threatens the well-being of the community.
Police Policy on tough sentences
What is the police presence in an area, and how competent are the police?
Risk of arrest and punishment
The lesser chance of being caught, the greater the ability to get away with it. And even if they do get caught, if the police fail to do a proper investigation, or build a proper case, the conviction will fail.
Parental relations
Relationship with parents, role models, etc.
Peer pressure
a feeling that one must do the same things as other people of one's age and social group to be liked or respected by them.
Education
Although it is considered in the criminal psychology environment that better educated people steal less or not at all, I found different results in a country where crime is the national sport. Higher educated people just steal differently. A person with a bachelor’s degree may not go shoplifting or steal a car, but he will scam someone into a business deal or pay a bribe to win a huge tender. You see, greed targets everyone. Pride targets everyone. And because of this, everybody wants to be somebody. Status is everything
