CHAPTER 1: THE ULTIMATUM
Andre raced home from school frantically trying to find his sister, Ashley. As he screamed her name she appeared from her room asking why he was screaming at the top of his lungs.
I need your help to hide my report card from mom and dad because if they see it they are going to kill me,
he said, out of breath.
Andre’s grades had fallen dramatically and he knew once his parents found out it wouldn’t be good. Andre paced back and forth in the kitchen as he handed over his report card to his sister so she could see what he was talking about.
Ashley looked at Andre’s report card in shock. Dre had always been one of the top students academically but lately he had a few issues.
What do I do? Mom and Dad are going to flip when they see my grades,
said, Andre.
Ashley explained that he shouldn’t lie to their parents, but tell the truth to get ahead of it. It’s better to be open, honest and upfront. Trying to hide something like this will only make the situation worse.
You know even though they give us a paper copy to bring home they also send a copy to mom and dad’s email address to ensure they get it?
asked, Ashley.
Dre had totally forgotten that report cards were emailed to their parents. There was no way he could avoid this. At this point Andre knew he had to face whatever consequences were waiting for him when his parents got home.
Suddenly, Andre heard his father call his name. Dre reluctantly walked into the living where his mother and father were sitting on the couch. As Andre sat down his father asked him if he knew why he called him into the living room. Taking the advice his sister had given him, Andre admitted it was most likely because the results they saw from his report card today. To no one’s surprise, that was exactly what Andre’s parents wanted to discuss with him.
Andre’s parents were very calm when speaking to him about his grades but he could tell they were very disappointed. Instead of scolding him, his parents asked if he had any clue about why he had such a rapid decline in his grades. His parents were more concerned about the reason than the grades themselves because they knew Andre could do much better than what his report card reflected. Andre couldn’t pinpoint why his grades declined but he knew he wanted to do whatever he could to bring them back to where they needed to be. Andre didn’t like disappointing his parents, especially his father, because they were very close and he knew it hurt his father to see him not doing well.
Andre’s father explained that his grades were concerning to him and thought his son had taken on too much trying to run his new business, the ONE4ONE Candy Shop, with his sister and two friends, Jordan and Lisa. Dre’s parents expressed to him that if he didn’t bring his grades up they would be forced to have him close down the business temporarily until he could bring up his grades and figure out how to do both successfully. Andre didn’t want to have to shut down the business so he assured them he would do whatever it took to get back on track in school. School was a priority for both of his parents, in particular, his mother who was a professor at Florida A&M University. Andre’s father told him he had five weeks to get his grades back within their standards. This would give him until the second half of the quarter to accomplish this. Dre accepted the terms and thanked his parents for giving him the opportunity to redeem himself.
Andre walked into his room, fell on his bed and buried his face into his pillow in frustration trying to figure out what to do next. As he lay there thinking about all of the possibilities to help him deal with everything that was going on, his twin sister, Ashley, walked into the room. She asked him if he was ok and if there was anything she could do to help? Andre just buried his head further into his pillow because he still had no clue what he was going to do.
I have an idea. It may not be the solution but it will get us in the right direction to finding one,
said, Ashley.
Andre sat up while his sister began to explain. She suggested bringing the issue to the rest of the ONE4ONE team so that they could work together to figure out how to help him.
That’s not an option,
said, Dre, with a blank look on his face.
Why not?
exclaimed, Ashley.
Andre didn’t want to bring his problems to anyone else. He figured he could just fix everything on his own. Dre felt it wouldn’t be fair to other members of the team because they weren’t the ones with the declining grades. Ashley reminded Dre that if he didn’t bring his grades up they would be
