Elizabeth and Richard Burton met in 1962 on the set of Cleopatra. Elizabeth was at the height of her raven beauty, but she seemed older than her twenty-nine years. She had been married three times and widowed once.

    #3

Elizabeth’s third husband, Mike Todd, was the epitome of a self-made man. He was part showman, part hustler, and part genius. He was the complete opposite of her husband Michael Wilding, and thus the complete opposite of her mild-mannered father.

    #4

Elizabeth was married to Mike Todd for 13 months, from March 1958 to May 1959. She was extremely fond of him, and he her, but she was also extremely devastated when he died in a plane crash. She turned to Todd’s closest friend and protégé, the crooner Eddie Fisher, who was married to Debbie Reynolds at the time.

    #5

The scandal of the Fisher marriage was used in 1965 when Jacqueline Kennedy was fighting her own public relations war over the publication of William Manchester’s The Death of a President. In a publicity battle against the writer and his publisher, Mrs. Kennedy appeared on the cover of Esquire with the pull quote: Anyone who is against me will look like a rat—unless I run off with Eddie Fisher.

    #6

Elizabeth’s marriage to Eddie Fisher was over, and she was already in love with Richard Burton. He was a much better match for her, as he could say no to her and stand up to her.

    #7

Cleopatra was a film that producer Walter Wanger was hired to produce. Wanger was a successful producer of over sixty pictures, most notably Joan of Arc in 1948 and Susan Hayward’s tearjerker I Want to Live! in 1958. He was up to the task of producing an epic.

    #8

The production of Cleopatra was delayed due to the weather and Elizabeth Taylor’s pneumonia. It left the studio $100,000 a day in debt. The entire set was moved to Rome, where it should have been all along.

    #9

The director, Mankiewicz, had been scheduled to accompany Mike Todd on his last, fatal flight on the Liz, but his sister-in-law, Sarah Mankiewicz, had had a premonition and warned him not to go. He took a different flight.

    #10

Rex Harrison replaced Peter Finch, and Burton was paid $250,000 plus overages, plus extras, such as transportation for himself and his family. The production budget grew even larger.

    #11

The production continued to spiral out of control. Mankiewicz was writing the script as they were shooting, which meant there was no time for streamlining and honing. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. But what redeemed the experience was falling in love with Richard Burton.

    #12

Elizabeth and Richard Burton met for the second time on the set
