A Fish in a Bottle
Lee was out by the lake outside his woodland village on a particularly warm summer day, reading a book with his feet immersed in the cold water. He was eagerly flipping the pages, waiting to get to the next section of the novel. It was a complicated story about a hero selected to guard a hidden family heirloom, only to discover the dark powers he had inherited from the heirloom. Lee had just arrived at the point where the hero bravely lost his abilities to save the planet when he was dragged from the fictional world by a voice. Hello!
Lee raised his head in excitement as he saw a girl with long braided brown hair seated next to him. She had sea-green eyes that looked directly into his. He said nervously, H-hi.
What are you now reading? She inquired.
Lee clarified that it is a tale about a hero who has supernatural abilities. Why is this so?
Oh, how I adore books! She cracked a grin. She averted her eyes from him and glanced about as if looking for something. The mysterious girl shook her head and returned her set attention to Lee. With a wide grin, she introduced herself as Marnie.
Lee, he said as he closed his journal. Marnie, where did you come from? He'd never seen her before in his village, and he met any new visitor that came in. He'd always wanted to go on a great adventure like the heroes of his novels, but he had no idea where to begin. So he opted with the tales told in the tavern by visitors to his little town.
Anything snapped in the woods behind them before Marnie could react. Marnie leaped to her feet and looked about frantically. She seemed to be pretending to disappear, and her gaze was drawn to the lake in front of them. Marnie sighed and turned to Lee; if someone asks, she says, You didn't see me.
I don't even exist! The girl slid into the sea, totally submerging herself in the center of the pool.
Lee returned to his journal, perplexed. But then he saw footsteps behind him, and two men walked out, holding big bags. Lee thought they were newcomers passing through the village, but the more he looked at them, the clearer it became that these two men were up to no good. The men were drawn to Lee and marched up to him. Hey, boy, said the guy in the brown hat. Have you ever seen a girl run through this area?
Yes, said the smaller one. He was wearing a blue and yellow belt around his wrist. She is approximately your generation. Blue eyes and dark brown locks. Have you seen her?
Marnie fit the definition to a tee. Lee sighed, his gaze fixed on the two guys. No, sirs, he replied respectfully. Only me and my book out there. He grinned as he showed them the shell.
That's a nice novel, said the first guy. Do you know where she could've gone, kid?
Lee shook his head. You are welcome to visit my village. He indicated the dirt lane. He clarified that if you only obey that, you'll be there in around five minutes. I hope you can locate your baby.
She isn't— the smaller man started to say, but the taller man elbowed him in the shoulder, effectively shutting him up. Yeah, really. His little girl. The guy concluded, She's my niece.
He cracked a grin.
As they started their way up the road, the taller man nodded and thanked Lee. Lee stood there and watched them walk away. Lee threw his book down, kicked off his sneakers, and hopped into the water, heading out to where he had last seen Marnie go under. Lee wasn't going to make the girl drown under his watch because she'd been under for way too long. He swam out, dove under the surface, and opened his eyes. Lee was driven sideways by a burst of yellow, landing on his back on a log in the water. He struggled to reach the surface until two arms wrapped around him and lifted him to the brink. He blinked and looked about.
Marnie clung to him closely, swimming better than any other kid he'd ever seen. Oh no, oh no, she exclaimed repeatedly. I'm sorry. I didn't intend to frighten you. Lee was pushed towards the lakeshore by her. He rose to his feet, trembling. He shook his head and turned to face Marine. He gave a quick blink. And then he blinked again. Marnie sat on the lakeshore, her legs replaced by a big yellowtail. She mumbled, wiggling her paws, surprised.
You are a mermaid! Lee stammered, her gaze fixed on her tail. It glistened in the late afternoon sunshine.
Marnie gave a smile. She yanked on her chain, a tiny clay bead with a sea turtle drawn on it. Her tail gradually vanished, replaced by a pair of human legs. She got up, slightly trembling. Thank you, Lee, she said, smiling.
He added, You're welcome.
Lee slumped on the grass, dripping wet from his swim in the pool. What is a mermaid doing out here? He wondered. How did you end up so far away from the sea?
The mermaid had a peek outside. She frowned as she sat down next to Lee. Those men had taken me away from my home a few months before, she said. I managed to flee them a few times, but when I came home, my relatives had vanished. Our little seaside village was destroyed by fire. None remained. Marnie's remarks came out chokingly.
I'm not sure how far I am from the sea, she admitted. What I want is to locate my dad. She was fiddling with her necklace.
Lee stood up abruptly, almost colliding with Marnie. He was thinking about the trip he and his mother were about to take to the seaside resort. They had a summer cottage waiting for them there, which they enjoyed every year during this period. Lee couldn't wait to get there, even though it was a quick flight. He screamed, Marnie!
I will assist you!
Do you think you can? Marnie inquired. How so?
He yelled, The sea!
From here, it's just a two-day drive. Lee turned to her, grinning and taking her hands. My mother and I are scheduled to leave any day now. We should quit right now and see her later. He smiled and rose to his feet. But as soon as he got up, his grin faded. The two men had arrived in his village. They'd notice her if she even entered the building. He let out a sigh. Why did those men take you, Marnie?
Marnie clarified that they decided to sell me to a collector. I've been having a lot of trouble with them, and they have this bracelet that prevents me from transforming. She glanced about, a little drawstring bag on her back. This is a gift from my family. It will call out to them as soon as I get close to the ocean. If those men realized I had it, they'd kidnap us all.
Lee smirked. He said, I've got an idea.
He extended his hand to her, and she took it. Lee directed Marnie the back way to the settlement, where his house stood far from the other buildings, thus collecting his books and boots with his free hand. Lee patted his horse's head as he approached the two of them. He crept up to the backdoor and gently pulled it open.
Lee? His mother inquired. Is it you, sir? She rounded the corner into the kitchen. Why are you drenched? She demanded. Her face melted as she saw Marnie standing behind Lee, almost as drenched as he was. Who is this? she inquired.
Lee introduced himself as Marnie to his mother. This is my mother, Marnie.
Marnie smiled when she said, It's good to meet you.
She exclaimed and dashed up to Lee's mum. She indicated her necklace. It was a similar bead shape, but instead of a sea turtle, a dolphin was drawn. You're nothing like me!
Lee's mother glanced at him, perplexed. He sighed and closed the door behind him. He dashed over to the front curtains, pulled them close, and ushered Marnie and his mother into his bedroom upstairs. Lee frowned and conveyed everything to his mother as he closed his room door behind him. She listened intently and then realized what was going on. She frowned when she reached out and kissed her jewelry.
I'm not a mermaid-like you, Marine. But this is from a close
