#1 Ocean City, Maryland, is a seashore town three hours south of Philadelphia. It is a summer getaway for the middle class, a city that bulges with tourists in May and September. In the summer of 1988, Ocean City was the hiding spot for mobster turned informant Nicholas Caramandi.
#2 Caramandi was a mob associate who had been working with the FBI for several years. He was charming and entertaining as he described the scams and swindles that had propelled his early life. He was formally initiated into the most violent Mafia family in America in 1984.
#3 Nick Caramandi was a member of the Philadelphia family, and he was tasked with protecting the organization. But he began to take them down, and as a result, he became a target of their paranoia.
#4 On the night of March 21, 1980, a maroon Chevrolet Caprice Classic pulled up to the curb in front of a two-story brownstone in South Philadelphia. John Stanfa, a Sicilian immigrant and owner of a small construction company, was behind the wheel. Angelo Bruno, the longtime boss of the Philadelphia mob, was in the passenger seat.

There are three dominant institutions in the Italian-American neighborhoods of South Philadelphia: the Catholic Church, the Democratic Party, and the mob. Not everyone believes in them, but by and large, almost everyone accepts or tolerates their presence.

The courtship between Caramandi and the mob began when he was a teenager on the corner of Seventh and Morris streets in South Philadelphia. He listened to the older teenagers talk about drugs and money, and their heroes were the guys from the neighborhood with connections and juice.

Caramandi was a con man and hustler, and he would marry and divorce multiple times over the years. He was completely amoral, and his days were spent conning and flimflamming. His nights and weekends were spent chasing broads, booze, and Lady Luck.

Ioan was a cash-and-carry operator, meaning he would take whatever he could get his hands on. He was always on the lookout for suckers, and would con them into giving him money.

A good con is better than a gun. You must have information to pull off a scam. If the booty is big enough, you go for it. The early results were mixed, but Caramandi learned to deal in information and developed the second major asset of any thief, burglar, or con man: information.

The group would find a fence for the jewelry and furs they stole, then sell the items. They would make between several hundred and several thousand dollars a week.
