#1 Muriel Pittam was a gorgeous young woman who knew it. She had no problem attracting men, and she flirted with every man she came in contact with. She was well-connected as a prominent member of the local Conservative party and a leading figure in the Anglican Church.
#2 Muriel and Derrick got married in 1941. The wedding photos are posed studio shots showing Mum with her hair swept up into a high style while she wears a dress of shimmering floor-length satin. They look like everyone’s idea of the glamour couple.
#3 Muriel’s success seemed complete in 1949, when she gave birth to a baby boy named Nigel. However, she was extremely displeased with him from the start, and she never looked at him except when posing for photos.
#4 The author’s mother, who was supposed to love her the most, became evil when she had two babies in quick succession. She became bitter and resentful, and her life was dominated by her routine at home with the children.

Insights from Chapter 2
#1
I was a very timid child, and I was very slow to talk. I was also very dependent on my brother, Nigel, for company. We rarely argued or fell out with each other. I remember one time when I pushed him off his tricycle because he wasn’t sharing it with me, but that was exceptional.
#2
I had a very strict mother, who did not allow me to have any toys or pictures in my bedroom. She would catch the dust as it fell, carefully lifting all my ornaments of pretty ladies in fancy hats to make sure the surfaces were spick and span underneath.
#3
I was always aware that I was not as beautiful as my mother. I wanted to be pretty so that she would love me and stop being angry with me. But she always told me that I was ugly.
#4
I remember being punished for little things, like spilling a little talcum powder on the bathroom rug, or asking for a drink, which could lead to me being confined in the spider cupboard.
#5
I was locked in the cupboard for punishments, and my only respite was at weekends when my father was around or
