About this ebook
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview:
#1 Our universe has woken up and become aware of itself. From a small blue planet, tiny conscious parts have begun gazing out into the cosmos with telescopes, and have found that everything they thought existed is merely a small part of something greater.
#2 The first step in the cosmic awakening was the formation of light and heat from the Big Bang. As our universe expanded and cooled, it grew more interesting as its particles combined into more complex objects.
#3 There is strong evidence that life first appeared on Earth about 4 billion years ago. The most successful life forms were able to react to their environment in some way. They were able to collect information about their environment and then process it to decide how to act back on their environment.
#4 You were able to perform all of those tasks when you were born, so all this software got programmed into your brain through the process of learning. While your childhood curriculum is largely designed by your family and teachers, you gradually gain more power to design your own software.

#1
Our universe has woken up and become aware of itself. From a small blue planet, tiny conscious parts have begun gazing out into the cosmos with telescopes, and have found that everything they thought existed is merely a small part of something greater.
#2
The first step in the cosmic awakening was the formation of light and heat from the Big Bang. As our universe expanded and cooled, it grew more interesting as its particles combined into more complex objects.
#3
There is strong evidence that life first appeared on Earth about 4 billion years ago. The most successful life forms were able to react to their environment in some way. They were able to collect information about their environment and then process it to decide how to act back on their environment.
#4
You were able to perform all of those tasks when you were born, so all this software got programmed into your brain through the process of learning. While your childhood curriculum is largely designed by your family and teachers, you gradually gain more power to design your own software.
#5
Life 2. 0 is able to be much smarter than Life 1. 0 because it is able to design its software. It is also more flexible because it can adapt to changes in the environment almost instantly. This has allowed Life 2. 0 to dominate Earth.
#6
Life as we know it is limited by its biological hardware. Life can live for a million years, and none can understand all known science or enjoy spaceflight without a spacecraft. The final upgrade, Life 3. 0, is capable of designing not only its software but also its hardware.
#7
There is a lot of controversy surrounding the question of when artificial general intelligence will be developed, and how it will affect humanity. The three schools of thought are digital utopians, techno-skeptics, and members of the beneficial-AI movement.
#8
When I was a kid, I imagined that billionaires exuded pomposity and arrogance. When I first met Larry Page at Google in 2008, he totally shattered these stereotypes. His thoughtful soft-spoken style and friendly smile made me feel relaxed rather than intimidated talking with him.
#9
Some believe that building superhuman AI is so difficult that it will not happen for hundreds of years, and therefore consider it unnecessary to worry about it now.
#10
Before 2015, the topic of AI risks was often misunderstood by mainstream AI researchers and dismissed as Luddite scaremonger. But in 2015, the topic became mainstream, and many groups around the world are now pursuing the sort of AI-safety research that Stuart Russell advocates.
#11
I organized a conference with leading AI researchers and other thinkers to bring the world’s leading AI researchers together and clear up any misunderstandings about AI. The outcome surpassed even my most optimistic expectations.
#12
The questions raised by the success of AI are not just intellectually interesting but also morally
