The Agricultural Revolution, also known as the Neolithic Revolution, occurred about 12,000 years ago. It first emerged in the Fertile Crescent, a region along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, down the eastern Mediterranean coast, and around Egypt’s Nile Delta.

Agricultural societies were able to generate significantly larger output than hunter-gatherer tribes, which supported a growing population. Meanwhile, the intensification of trade within each agricultural community freed individuals to specialize in a particular occupation.

As settlements grew and became more complex, there emerged a need for more widespread cooperation beyond the capabilities of the kinship framework. The political and religious institutions that emerged to serve this need allowed our ancestors to collaborate on a much larger scale.

The Neolithic Revolution, which occurred around 5,500 years ago, was spurred by and led to technological advancement. It transformed the lifestyle and tools of human
