Poems from a Prison - Alex Brengle

    #1 - The Enchantress

Be there e’er a rose so dark as thine eyes

Whose beauty lies in sacred gaze so fair?

Thy skin kissed by the sun’s majestic rays,

And honey’s sweet aroma on thine air.

    Thy wine brewed in love-drunk intoxicants;

In whose cup besieged by thy binding spell.

Venoms thou steep in captivating scents,

Upon thy kiss, your lips my heart’s pace quelled.

Does not thine heart command thy desire?

As for mine, I could not love thee more!

Thy shape draws me like a moth to the fire,

As the day is bleaker without its light,’

So, too, is mine soul a void without thee.

For solemn days succeed romantic nights

And leave naught but somber memories.

Death’s eternal frost waits within thy tomb,

Yet hast thou not unfinished desires?

Thy wid’wer drowns in tears upon thy bosom,

Yet on thy breathless face a living smile.

When thou d’ost enjoin Eden, be at peace.

For on mine heart dwells thy heavenly grace.

    #3 - Rebecca

As angels’ descent, thou d’ost approach me.

Thine loveliness ripened, I dare not believe!

I learn it true that may breath stolen be.

Life’s air though bringst for mine heart to relieve.

    Cursed, captive lips! Why
