Come with the Wind - Nicodemus Tells His Story - Donald V Goodridge
THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
3: 1 – 21
NOW THERE WAS a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.
In reply Jesus declared, I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.
How can a man be born when he is old?
Nicodemus asked. Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!
Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear the sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.
How can this be?
Nicodemus asked.
You are Israel’s teacher,
said Jesus, "and do you not understand these things? I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven – the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.

My Confession!
Foreword
DONALD GOODRIDGE HAS provided us with a carefully researched biographical novel of Nicodemus, a Pharisee and ruler of the Jews. The novel is based on the visit of Nicodemus with Jesus, recorded in chapter 3 of John’s Gospel.
The author’s purpose in writing was to bring to the reader the spiritual and historic significance of an epic event of eternal consequence, leading to a full commitment to Jesus Christ.
One of the great challenges in such a work is to maintain an element of surprise, when many of the readers will be familiar with the story as recorded in John’s Gospel. This has been accomplished by employing some creative imagination in places where the Scriptural account is silent. Throughout the novel the author has been true to the Biblical record.
To add to the element of surprise, the author makes good use of many of the minor characters of the drama including the wife of Nicodemus. A most interesting link is made throughout between Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea.
The reader will benefit greatly by the explanation of many Jewish terms and customs.
The novel is not a sermon but draws us personally into the account. We share in many of the decisions Nicodemus had to make.
The final chapter, My Confession
is the personal experience of the author, and may not represent the individual experience of the reader. The WIND blows this way and that. You hear it rustling through the trees, but you have no idea where it comes from and where it’s headed next. That’s the way it is with everyone born from above by the wind of God, the Spirit of God.
(John 3:8; The Message)
Come With The Wind
explains not only what is recorded in John’s Gospel but also what is left out. The author possesses the rare gift of sanctified imagination.
Certainly you will be guided to new trends of thought as you move through the novel. The author has provided us with fresh inspiration as we contemplate not only God’s leading in the life of Nicodemus, but also God’s leading in our own lives as we are open to the WIND of the Spirit.

To the best of my knowledge, I have not quoted verbatim from any of the above resources. I have incorporated materials into my storyline such as I deemed essential to the plot. Thank you all for your diligence and dedication in the support of the cause of Jesus Christ. I trust my efforts will speed your mission on its way.
I acknowledge the prayer support for this project that has been assured by everyone who has learned of this undertaking. It is humbling to experience the inspiration and discipline that begins in the prayer closet. I pray the results will confirm that your prayers have been answered.
My very special thanks go to my former pastors, Majors Les and Cathy Burrows, and my church family of the Kelowna Community Church of The Salvation Army. Their prayers I have always felt around me in my daily walk with God, but their interest in the writing of this book has added immeasurable depth to the prayer support, and much encouragement to its writing. God bless you all.
Of special significance is the tireless and meticulous proofing that my wife contributed to the book. Elsie, only you could give such uncompromising critique to my writing, without damage to my ego. I love you for your integrity, and your sensitivity. Thank you!
I acknowledge the uncompromising direction and encouragement of the publisher, Trafford Publishing. Your leap of faith in the accepting of this work greatly confirms the hand of God upon it that it should be written to his glory and the spiritual blessing of its readers.
Last but foremost, with gratitude well beyond words sufficient to express it, I acknowledge my thanks to General Bramwell Tillsley, 14th General and World Leader of The Salvation Army (1993 -1994), himself the author of four books, for his valuable advice and the writing of the Foreword for the book. God bless you Sir!
Preface
WHAT A JOURNEY it has been! In these pages you have the second book I have been privileged to write.
It is however my first novel!
Though at first reluctant to write a second book, I confess to the persistent prompting of the Holy Spirit that I should write a book on this particular theme.
Through the deep sense of the Spirit’s presence in my morning devotional periods, I gained confirmation that I must put it off no longer.
The story of Nicodemus needs to be told!
Those precious times in prayer and in the study of the Word brought untold blessing to my labors.
Though his involvement in the biblical narrative is very scarce, he is central with Jesus Christ in a major chapter in the Gospel of John that has become pivotal to Christian faith and practice.
In my research I found that he holds significant influence beyond the pages of our Protestant versions of the Holy Scriptures.
I have borrowed heavily from those additional sources, taking great care to be true to our traditional scriptures that I hold to be the divinely inspired word of God.
I do not quote frequently from the Bible, but my references to those passages pertinent to the story line reflect accurately the facts as they are disclosed in both the Old and New Testaments.
I concede to considerable poetic license in the building of the plot, but nowhere that I am aware of do I contradict the commonly held interpretations of scripture.
The sole objective of this book is to inspire you, the reader, to an uncompromising commitment to Jesus Christ and the truths of the Gospel Message.
I pray most sincerely that you will be truly uplifted in your faith journey, to the praise and glory of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.
(Matthew 11:28;)
HELLO
CHAPTER 1
Hello
IT WAS A dark and stormy night! No, this is not a spooky story around the camp fire, despite that I begin its writing on what used to be called All Hallows Night,
a celebration of the lives of Christian Saints, long since dead, though still alive (I’ll explain later); and is now, in your time, called Halloween.
This I assure you, it was a very dark and blustery night, with eerie, howling winds.
It was also a night of intrigue, one might say truthfully, a clandestine night that took place more than 2000 years ago.
I could never have guessed that it would lead to the exposure of what I believe to be the most diabolical plot against innocent human life ever recorded.
I concede that history has uncovered myriad unspeakable atrocities enacted by man against his fellowmen. But my story exposes a willful and savage attack by human kind against the very God of creation, all in the name of religion. In fact, it reveals the end result of power corrupted by high authority in achievement of personal gain, resulting in the incredulity of all spiritual pursuit.
Nor could I have ever imagined that my involvement in the story would literally put my life on the line, and would require of me decisions that would be life-changing, and would shake my belief system to the very core.
Oh, please forgive me! I have not introduced myself. My name is Nicodemus. Yes the very Nicodemus you can read about in the Gospel of John in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. How did John come to write about me in the first place? Well, its because he is actually involved in my story.
The three other writers of the Gospels do not mention this part of my story because they knew nothing of that night, and John’s part in it.
The Apostle Peter, as it turned out, did have knowledge of the account I am about to give. He was the assumed leader of the twelve disciples, and generally was in on everything that concerned his Lord.
What came to pass that night was kept hush-hush because other human lives, not to mention mine, depended upon it. Indeed, the whole story was not revealed until John wrote his wonderful gospel that bears his name. Even then, only essential information was given.
It was an experience that in the beginning I would have never chosen for myself. It dramatically changed my life forever!
It was a night that left the destiny of my nation hanging in the balance and, as it turned out, the moment of truth for all mankind throughout all ages.
Why me Lord?
Or, O my God!
Either expletive has likely crossed our lips on more than one occasion. Seldom, if ever, is an individual faced with a decision that has life-or-death consequences, much less one that has one’s eternity hanging in the balance. Such occasions never come with fanfare. Rarely do other people notice, not even loved ones. Yet, I found myself confronted with just such a decision: unavoidable, and exceedingly consequential.
As it turned out, that night would produce the greatest question ever to face mankind, and it would set in motion the greatest injustice the world would ever see again.
I do not suggest that other atrocities before or after this event do not match or even exceed the extremes of human suffering this story portrays. But I am talking about pitting human rebellion against divine purpose, producing a struggle that would sweep the generations of all peoples of the world, then and now, to the edge of eternity and the very brink of Hell.
Would I wish it never to have happened? Oh yes indeed! Was I ever glad for the outcome? Oh yes! Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes! But it is best that I delay the details so that you might better understand and perhaps empathize with my dilemma!
I am certain that you too will be caught up with the eternal consequences of the question posed!
…Who do you say I am?
(Matthew 16:15;)
CHAPTER 2
Credentials
NICODEMUS, SON OF Gorion! So?
I can understand your indifference. But as a Jew, other than Job of the Old Testament, my ancestry ranked among the highest in all Israel.
If personal wealth is held by some to be the measure of the man,
then I had it made. A wealth so exaggerated as to gossip that I could support all the inhabitants of Jerusalem for ten years.
But, Son of Gorion
held far greater significance than the family fortune. The ancestry of a Jew was, and still is, of the greatest importance to the family influence among one’s peers, with the most significant genealogies dating back to the days of Moses. In fact, the lineage of the person who is central to my story was traced back to Adam, the first human being to live on the earth, created by God himself.
He will take center-stage in the drama that will unfold within the pages of this book.
Not only was I a very rich man; of greater importance to me was my position as a Pharisee, afforded me by ancestral rite that can be traced back through the genealogies of the priesthood of our religion established by Aaron, brother to Moses. He was the first high priest of the Jewish religion.
Yes! I am a descendant of the tribe originally set apart by God from all the other tribes of Israel, for the practice and preservation of all religious observances associated with our nation - the tribe of Levi.
Could anyone have a greater inheritance? This far exceeded the influence of my wealth.
Yet strangely, both these blessings, wealth and religion, were to become the stumbling block to the preservation of my eternal soul.
There is a further source of influence that you need to know about as we proceed with my story.
I was a member of the Jewish Sanhedrin, the ruling government of the Jewish people, albeit under the dictatorial tyranny of our Roman conquerors.
Our Council was not a democratically elected body. There were seventy-two members, all appointed by the High Priest, albeit not without the consummate interest of the Roman Governor, Pilate.
The Sanhedrin comprised members of two opposing factions within our religion, the Pharisees and the Sadducees that, despite their ecclesiastical distinction, could pass as the government and opposition parties of modern day democracies.
The focal point of our differences was that we Pharisees believed in the resurrection of the dead. The Sadducees did not! This may not of itself give you any concern, but that doctrinal difference would prove to be the pivotal point of the drama that was soon to be enacted within this esteemed jurisdiction.
In all fairness, the Sadducees were originally a Jewish priestly order of deep spiritual significance within the life of our nation.
Over centuries of time they became entangled in godless religious dogmas that produced unbelief in any spiritual claims to a life hereafter, quickly eroding any thought of the need of a spiritual epiphany.
This meant that they shared no interest in the so-called Messiah
we Pharisees had anticipated over the centuries of multiple enemy occupations and disbursements of our nation.
As for us Pharisees, we had always hoped for a spiritual deliverance and restoration to the fellowship of God through the promised Messiah. But such an aspiration had over time become reduced to the hope of national deliverance from our many enemies, especially
