    Chapter One:

    On a long outback highway sat a lonely town called Nowhere.

    For many, it was a blur going past their car window, or a quick stopover for fuel and food. But for a small few, Nowhere was home.

    Mac swept the red dirt away from the door of his petrol station. The dirt was inescapable, but he wanted the floor inside clean.

    Night had fallen, so he could get through some chores while there were no customers. Under the floodlights the yard sat empty, lighting up the pumps that were about to be switched off. Across the road, the outside lights of the pub were still on, but no one was there. Beyond that, the complete darkness of the outback at night.

    Nowhere was Mac’s home these days. It was an isolated town. Except the tourists, it was separate from the rest of the world. Without the visitors the locals wouldn’t have known there was an outside world.

    It was the perfect place to escape from the world.

    Mac put the broom back behind the door. His servo was small, the front room was big enough for a counter, and some shelves stocking basic needs for the residents of Nowhere.

    He looked out the small window next to the counter, checking there were no cars coming before he shut the pumps down for the night.

    There were no cars, only something lying on the road.

    That wasn’t there a moment ago, Mac frowned.

    Probably it was just some animal, he thought. He had to go check.

    Crossing the brightly lit yard Mac walked over to the lump in the middle of the highway. Expecting a kangaroo, he approached without caution.

    It wasn’t a roo. Mac froze when he saw the human face and body lying on the road.

    The young bloke was dressed
