Russia had been playing on my mind the closer we got. It wasn’t the border crossing that I was worried about, more the mix of the horror stories we’d been told and the great unknown. Would the roads be open? Would the bikes be safe and would we need to bribe the police? What about insurance? I kept telling myself there was no point in worrying about any of these questions, as we wouldn’t get any answers until we got there. Various internet forums said that we’d need to purchase third party insurance. It wasn’t worth the paper it was written on, but if we didn’t have it and we were stopped by the police our bikes could be impounded.
The border crossing was relatively straightforward, and after an hour of paperwork we were back out to the bikes where a serious looking Russian woman wanted to inspect everything. It was almost
