By the halfway point in our four-week adventure, we’d reached Castello Di Godego, in Italy. The plan was for about 10 days of ‘lake hopping’, with a day travelling then a day off the bike sightseeing.
Once again, we used a certain booking app and found a fantastic family-run hotel, the Locanda Al Sole. It even had underground parking for the bike. We’d booked it for two nights so we could go to Bassano Del Grappa by train the following day, and the hotel was about 400 metres from the train station.
After we got sorted at the hotel we went for a walk into the village centre, found a café in the square which had outside seating, and served very nice Prosecco quite cheaply and, yes, I went a bit OTT with it. At dinner, due to my inability to speak Italian (and being a bit drunk) I ordered the à la carte menu – seven courses and wine! This was an incredible culinary experience. The food was all local specialities, the courses being small, but good, with a bottle of local Prosecco to wash it down, all at a very reasonable price.
The next day we went by train to Bassano. I use trains when away quite a lot as it allows us to visit places wearing normal clothes, and as always, the Italian trains were quiet, cheap, clean and quick, getting us into town in 15 minutes, at €5 return.
