Her Billionaire Gardener - Laura Ann

    Prologue

Teagan’s cell phone buzzed on the coffee table as she sat curled up on the couch with her nose buried in a textbook. Hearing the noise, she glanced up at the phone then down at her lapful of school stuff. Laken? Teagan called out to her identical twin sister.

    Hmm?

Can you come grab my phone? My hands are full.

I just painted my nails. Sorry!

Teagan rolled her eyes and shoved all her things aside as the phone continued to buzz. She glanced at the caller ID when she picked it up and smiled. Hey, Big Bro! What’s up?

Hi, Teagan. How goes school? You and Laken getting ready for finals?

Teagan blew out a big puff of air Yeah. Well, I am at least. Good thing I’ve only got a couple years left because I’m about ready to call it quits. She laughed.

    I know the feeling.

Eh, you old men finished school forever ago! You probably don’t even remember what it was like to live in a dorm.

Watch it, Teags, or I won’t send you cookies anymore.

Sorry! I’ll never call you old again, Hay.

A deep chuckle came through the line, followed by a pause. Hey, so uh, I kind of have something to tell you girls. Can you grab Laken?

    Teagan frowned. Is everything okay?

Yeah. Of course. It’s just… well, it’s kind of unbelievable and I wanted to tell you together.

O-kay. Hang on a sec. Teagan put the phone down. Laken! Can you come here please?

Why? Laken called from her bedroom.

Because Hayden wants to talk to us both.

Laken padded to the entrance of the small family room. Why does he need to talk to us?

Teagan held in her frustration. I don’t know. He hasn’t told me anything.

Laken rolled her eyes toward heaven. This better be good. I was watching a movie and letting my nails dry.

He wouldn’t have asked for us both if it wasn’t important. Teagan put the phone back to her ear. I’m putting you on speaker, Hay. Hang on. She pressed a button and put the phone on the coffee table. Okay. Go ahead.

Okay, so… He blew out a breath. So you two know that Eli, Nelson and I have been working on this castle."

The crazy pile of rubble? Yeah, we know, Laken scoffed.

Teagan shot her twin a look. Laken shrugged unapologetically.

Right. Hayden’s voice was tight and Teagan could tell he was angry at Laken’s interruption. Anyway, we were tearing down a wall and found a hidden door.

Teagan’s eyes went wide. What? Really? You found a hidden passage?

Yeah. It took us all off guard.

Did you go inside and explore? Teagan’s voice grew in volume as she felt excitement building inside her. How cool is that?

So dumb, Laken mouthed before shaking her head. It’s probably full of dust and cobwebs.

Teagan ignored her and focused on Hayden’s story.

At the bottom of the stairs we went through this huge wooden door and we found something. Again he paused and Teagan found herself bouncing in anticipation.

What? What did you find? Some old books? A torture chamber?

Torture chamber? Really, Teagan? Laken rolled her eyes again and studied her newly done nails.

Teagan waved an impatient hand at her sister. What was it, Hayden?

    We found a treasure.

Silence enveloped them for several moments before chaos broke loose and the girls began shouting out questions.

What? What do you mean a treasure?

This isn’t like a treasure of old antique stuff is it?

    Was it old?

    Is it worth anything?

What are you going to do with it?

    Is it sellable?

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hayden’s voice boomed through the tiny speaker and both Teagan and Laken snapped their mouths shut.

If you two will be quiet for a minute, I’ll tell you, he growled.

Teagan could hardly breathe. A hidden treasure. That’s crazy! Who finds hidden treasure anymore?

Laken huffed and folded her arms across her chest. Go on, then, she snapped at the phone.

The room was full of gold and jewels. Truth be told, it looks like a pirate’s bounty down here, but that wouldn’t make sense with it being a castle and all. He sighed. We’re still pretty much in shock about it. We have no idea how much it’s all worth, but we’re guessing… it’s a lot. The entire room is full. Eli is on the phone right now trying to call the right government authorities to help us deal with this.

You might also need a lawyer, Hay, Teagan added. There’s probably going to be a ton of red tape.

Yeah. I’ll tell Eli. That’s a good thought. Anyway, we wanted to tell you girls before the media frenzy hit. As soon as some reporter gets wind of this, odds are, we’ll be buried by cameras.

How much of it are you going to get to keep? Laken asked.

I don’t know. There was a shuffling sound on the other side and Teagan could imagine him running his hand through his hair. It looks pretty old, so I guess there’s always the possibility we won’t get to keep any of it.

    What? Laken screeched.

Lake! I don’t know! Calm down, huh? We’re just going to have to wait it out… Geez. Forgive me for not knowing how this works. Finding treasure isn’t exactly your everyday event.

No need to be snarky, Laken grumbled. I can’t help it if I’m excited about the possibility of being wealthy.

Laken! Teagan hissed. We didn’t find that treasure, the boys did. Even if they get to keep it, we don’t get to assume we get any of it.

Well why not? We’re their sisters, aren’t we? Laken made a face.

Yes, but you’re not entitled to their salary from their jobs, why would you be entitled to this?

Laken opened her mouth to respond, but Hayden spoke over her. How about we just wait it all out, huh? If by some miracle we get to keep it and it’s actually worth something, then we can talk about what we’re going to do.

That’s a great plan, Hay. But remember you don’t owe us anything, Teagan reassured him.

Laken stuck her tongue out and Teagan ignored her.

Alright. Well… I better go. I need to make some other calls to help out Eli, and Nelson is too busy walking around touching everything to be of any use, so…

Love you, Hay. We’ll talk to you soon, Teagan said.

Love you too. Take care, girls.

    Bye, Laken added.

Teagan pressed the ‘off’ button then sat in stunned silence on the couch.

Think the boys will pay off our student loans? Laken murmured.

Laken! Our brothers just found a hidden treasure and all you can think about is whether you’re going to get any money! Teagan’s shoulders sagged and she gave her sister a disappointed look.

Well, what do you expect? Treasure means money. Laken scowled at her twin, then stood and headed back to her bedroom. I need to wash my face before going to bed. I have a date tomorrow and don’t want bags under my eyes.

Teagan shook her head but let her sister go. She glanced at the textbooks and spiral notebooks next to her. There’s no way I’ll be able to concentrate now. She scrunched up her nose. A hidden treasure. Teagan huffed out a laugh. I didn’t know that kind of thing even existed any more. This is crazy!

Her phone buzzed and she glanced down at a text from Hayden.

Forgot to mention, watch out for reporters and stuff. They’ll probably try to find you when this all breaks and we want you safe.

Teagan’s mouth stretched into a soft smile. Always trying to protect me, even when he’s not here, she said softly. Picking up the phone she answered him.

Will do. Thanks. And good luck.

I think we’re going to need it. Thanks.

Leaving her things on the couch, Teagan headed for bed. Might as well see if I can get any sleep. Maybe I’ll be able to study tomorrow morning instead. She shook her head. A hidden treasure. It’s unreal.

    Chapter One

Teagan stepped out of the moving van and immediately stretched her arms to the sky. Ooooh... she moaned. Clasping her hands together in front of her, she twisted this way and that, doing her best to work the kinks out of her tight back.

"I am never doing that again, Laken snapped as she stepped out of the car she had been driving behind Teagan. My backside hasn’t had feeling in it for the last five hours."

Mmm… going numb might have been a blessing, Teagan mused. Her head jerked toward the log cabin mansion in front of her when she heard the door open.

You’re here! Cadence, the twins’ sister-in-law hurried out the front door and into the driveway. She grabbed Teagan in a fierce hug. I’m so glad you made it alright, she said in her low, smooth voice. Leaning back, Cadence put her hands on Teagan’s shoulders and smiled at her. How was the drive?

A nightmare, Laken whined just as Teagan opened her mouth to answer the question.

Cadence’s eyes shot to Laken, then back to Teagan. One of her eyebrows went up in silent question.

Teagan smiled. It was fine, she said simply.

Cadence squeezed her shoulders then moved over to Laken and gave her a quick hug as well. Well, regardless, we’re glad you’re here, Cadence said politely. Come on inside. She eyed the sky. It looks like it could rain at any moment, and I have no intention of tempting fate.

Teagan smiled and moved to the door, but Laken had other ideas. I really need to unpack my clothes and things. The wrinkles are going to be epic. Can we come visit another time? I just want to get to our cabin.

Cadence paused. Oh. Okay. That’s fine. Whatever you want to do is great. Do you want me to ride with one of you to the cabin? Or just directions?

Why don’t you ride with me? Teagan spoke up. She’s going to think we don’t like her if Laken keeps complaining.

Cadence smiled. Great! Let me just lock up.

Laken fluffed her long, dark hair and walked back to her car. I’m not in the mood to entertain anyone tonight, so if you want her over, she’s your responsibility.

Teagan frowned. She’s our sister-in-law. She’s not expecting us to entertain her. She knows we’ve been travelling for two days.

Laken rolled her eyes. Whatever. I just want to put my clothes up and then go to sleep. She touched the skin under her light grey eyes. I hate it when I have dark bags, it makes me look old.

Teagan sighed and resisted the urge to roll her eyes. You always look beautiful, she said out of habit. How can twins be so different? And why can’t Laken just chill for once? We haven’t even been here five minutes and she’s already groaning.

Right! I’m ready, Cadence said as she stepped out and locked the door behind her. She walked over and hopped into the passenger side of the moving van while Teagan sat in the driver’s seat. If you’ll just back out and go that way. Cadence pointed toward the road. Your cabin isn’t very far. It’ll only take a minute to drive there.

Thank heavens, Teagan said on a sigh. I’m ready to never see the inside of a moving van again.

Cadence laughed lightly. Yeah. I’m sure driving one for days isn’t exactly the most exciting of adventures.

The truck jerked as Teagan put it into reverse and Cadence’s hand shot to her stomach.

Teagan frowned and glanced over at her sister-in-law’s slightly pale face. You okay?

Cadence swallowed and forced a smile. Yep, she said firmly.

I’ll try to drive more smoothly, Teagan said softly as she started down the road.

Don’t worry about it, it’s nothing you’ve done, Cadence reassured her.

Teagan hummed an answer but didn’t comment more. I wonder if they’re going to have an announcement for us soon? Won’t that be fun! First Ivy and now Cadence! The place will be crawling with babies! Is Hayden still at work?

Cadence nodded. Yep. Go ahead and pull in here, she pointed to a small gravel drive off the road they were on.

Teagan followed her directions, noting that Laken pulled in behind them.

Alrighty, this is it! Cadence waved her hand at the small, rustic cabin in front of them.

Teagan smiled. It looked like something out of a fairy tale. The tiny cottage had been an old hunting lodge, but when Teagan and Laken had agreed to come join their brothers in running the Avangarde Castle and Resort, their brothers, Eli, Hayden and Nelson, had had the place fixed up for the twins.

The resort had opened a couple of years ago when the brothers found a hidden treasure in the bottom of the castle. Eli, Hayden and Nelson had all thrown their money together to purchase the property in order to open a bed and breakfast, but when they’d suddenly struck it rich, they’d used the money to renovate the entire castle into a resort destination. Eli ran the hospitality end of things, Hayden had opened an on-site restaurant and Nelson ran the outdoor activities they scheduled. Now, Teagan and Laken were coming to put their own sections of the resort in place.

Teagan parked the van and rested her hands on the steering wheel. It’s beautiful, she said softly. She could just imagine planting some climbing roses on one of the front corners and putting in a trellis to allow it to work its way right up the cabin wall. Snapdragons and lilies would add some whimsy and color to the whitewashed wood. Maybe I could even have some window boxes put in.

Her peaceful musings were interrupted when Laken knocked on her window.

Teagan quickly unbuckled and stepped out of the large vehicle. Ready to get unloaded? Teagan said with a smile, but her cheer drooped at Laken’s disgusted expression. What’s the matter?

I don’t know how we’re going to do it, Laken said curtly putting her hands on her hips.

Uh… Teagan glanced over at Cadence, who was frowning in confusion, then turned back at Laken. Do what?

Live here! Laken opened her eyes wide and waved an arm toward the cottage. I think this place is smaller than the apartment we shared!

Teagan studied the cottage closer. Yeah, it might be. But it won’t last forever. Eli has said if we want to, we can have our own houses built.

Laken shook her head. That might be two years or more down the road, since we’re having the additions to the resort built first. I don’t think I’ll last that long in something so small.

Cadence stepped closer, a strained smile on her face. Why don’t we look at the inside before we make any decisions, hmm? The men had it all redone just for you and I think you might enjoy it.

Laken sighed but followed Cadence’s lead.

Teagan rubbed her temples as a headache threatened. Why does she have to be unhappy with everything? At college we seemed to at least get along, but she’s been getting worse and worse the closer we got to coming here. Does she not want to work at the resort? Maybe she had other plans? Teagan shook her head and huffed. Laken had always been high maintenance and spoiled. Where Teagan loved quiet and peace, Laken thrived on crowds and attention. Teagan was fascinated by plants and natural beauty, but Laken sought out the best beauty products man had to offer.

Normally Teagan wasn’t as bothered by her spoiled sister, but sometimes Laken’s neediness grew tiring. And today is one of those days. I wish she would learn to just go with the flow sometimes.

Pushing her tired legs into action, Teagan followed the other women into the cabin. Her breath caught once she was inside
