Standing Tall
I’m standing on the shoulders of every black man
I’m reaching for the sky
Their wisdom helps me understand
Their history tells no lie.
All of those that have gone before
Generations of prejudice and abuse
Their legacy I can’t ignore,
And for complacency there’s no excuse.
They gave me such a great foundation
Slaves that toiled to set me free
On their backs they built this nation,
And carried it into the twenty first century.
But in a world where nothing is given
There’s no time to sit and grieve
Thanks to God I’m strongly driven
My dreams to achieve.
Black Butterfly
Beautiful Black Butterfly,
Where oh where are you bound?
Made with all the colors that heaven could supply
Fragile and yet so profound.
You’re nature’s curator in the gardens of beauty
Laboring hour after hour,
And bound by your sense of duty
You must care for every flower.
Precious is the world that you live in
A place where the eyes delight
Vanishing each day at evening,
And reappearing at mornings light.
But a part of you has been stolen,
And life is passing you by
The wings of your soul, although golden
Have never touched the sky.
You’ve never known tenderness,
Or felt the excitement of romance
You’ve never experienced a first kiss,
Or taken the time to dance.
You’ve never heard a romantic love song,
And felt a curious thrill
You’ve never seen what the endless fathoms,
Below the oceans reveal.
You’ve never stood on a mountain top
That was white and covered with snow,
Or seen the valleys that time forgot
Where flowers never grow.
You’ve never gazed upon a moonlit sky,
And been drawn by its tempting allure,
Or felt
