    Chapter One

Did you see Brandon and Brooklyn walking to class together? Aren’t they so cute?

You know how you can just wake up and tell you’re gonna have a bad day? I can’t really explain it, but it always starts off with something small. Like my mama tripping on me this morning for not telling her I was running low on toothpaste after I came into her room to borrow her and my daddy’s tube. Which led to a whole stupid lecture about communication and responsibility. All over a stupid tube of toothpaste?

Then on the way to school I asked her to stop by Chick-fil-A because I was craving a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit meal. But once she saw how long the drive-thru line was she changed her mind and told me to just get breakfast from my school’s cafeteria. Truthfully, I believe she was still salty about the toothpaste incident and that was her payback.

Anyway, after eating a cold breakfast of that pre-packaged cereal the cafeteria serves, I have to deal with this wilderbeast named Neveah trying to throw shade at me while I’m at my locker. I try to ignore her and her little clique of minions that are always glued to her hip, continuing to mind my business as I take a notebook out of my locker for my first period math class. But of course, Neveah doesn’t know when to shut up.

Brandon and Brooklyn has such a nice ring to it. It’s almost like they were made for each other, she went on. Out of the corner of my eye I could see her cut her eyes in my direction, waiting for me to say something.

See, it’s like this: Brandon Patterson was my bae since sixth grade. We broke up a lot though and he would go back and forth between me and this other girl named Madison. Now he has more of a history with Madison because they’ve been going together (off and on) since like the fifth grade. I felt sooo lucky when he finally gave me a chance. All of the girls at Turner Middle School had crushes on Brandon but he chose me! Madison tried to act like she wasn’t bothered when he finally got with me but I know she was still feeling him cause she always takes him back whenever we break up. Well Brandon and I had our last breakup this past January right after returning to school from winter break. I thought we’d be back together by Valentine’s Day but he’s moved on. With my best friend! Well, ex-best friend.

Humph, she’s better than me cause I woulda been gave Brooklyn a beat down. How you just gonna steal your best friend’s man like that? Neveah’s crony, Dajah, chimed in.

I remember my mama once said to never let females see you sweat but these broads were stepping on my last nerve!

Puh-leaze, Cheyenne ole bougie tail ain’t about that life. All she do is sit in a corner and cry somewhere every time Brandon dumps her.

I’d heard enough! Slamming my locker I turned to face the booga-bear and her group of flunkies.

"First of all, ain’t nobody steal nothing away from me! Me and Brandon broke up months ago. If you gonna talk about my business at least come correct and know what it is you’re talking about."

"Girl, bye! You know you’d take Brandon back in a heartbeat if he came crawling back to you. Now that’s something I do know. But nah, he’d go back to Madison before coming back to you. He’s always liked her better. Now he got you looking even more stupid, out here talking to your best friend. Instead of stepping to us you need to be checking Brooklyn." Neveah challenged.

Nah, I’m good. I may just try to talk to Jadarius I said. Jadarius Collins was Neveah’s ex-boo thang. She had a lot of nerve trying to sit up here and talk about how bad I wanted Brandon back when she’s the same way when it comes to him.

I got the reaction I expected cause she stepped up in my face and placed her finger against my forehead, nearly mushing my head back against my locker. Girl, try me if you want to. Unlike your scary behind, I ain’t no punk. I ain’t scared to clock a broad for trying to take what’s mine.

I took a step back cause Neveah was right; I was no fighter. But I wasn’t about to go out like a coward either and let her see that I was scared. I continued to talk smack. "What was it you just said to me? I’m not the one you need to be checking either. You need to go to Jadarius and tell him to stop begging for my cell number every day during sixth period."

    Neveah swung
