Chapter 1
June 1951
Dear Diary,
When my best friend Regina told me she and her parents were moving away because of her dad’s new job, it felt like a betrayal. Did her parents not understand that her friendship meant the world to me? I couldn’t fathom life without my partner in crime. What if she found new friends and forgot all about me? I was depressed for weeks after she told me the news. I was certain my life was over and I’d never recover from the loss.
A month later, she and her family were packed and ready to go, and with them my life, the one I was certain was over. A week after they moved away a new family moved in. We hadn’t met them yet, but I knew instantly I’d never like any of them and I’d make sure they knew it. I was pretty sure one of their rotten kids was in Regina’s old room, probably redecorating it and making it look ridiculous. The more I thought about the tragic event in my life, the more mad I got.
The end of school and summer vacation was still four months away. I could just picture all of them in the back yard, making a huge racket every time they swam in Regina’s big pool. Sigh… Oh, how I was going to miss that pool. But there was no way I’d ever swim in it again, even if they asked me to. Which they wouldn’t because we’d be mortal enemies until the day we died. Regina and I had spent so much time in the water that we always looked like shriveled up prunes by the time our moms called us for dinner.
