Chapter 1

Hannah followed the lioness out of Camp Remarkable. She had no idea if this was a good idea or not. All she knew was that she had to do it.

They reached the line of the jungle, the female lion stopping for a moment. She raised her nose to the air and inhaled.

Then ran off.

Hannah turned just time to see what had spooked the animal—a ranger’s truck making a beeline for the camp’s front gate.

She hurried back inside the fence-line. It was against the camp’s rules to be outside of it without consent and another person. It was far too dangerous to be walking around out here alone.

Other volunteers and staff were assembling around the vehicle. The rangers didn’t often visit the camp. They normally only came when there was trouble or they found an injured animal. Their presence was never a good sign.

Just as she reached the truck, another one pulled in.

Then another.

They kept arriving until the camp was full to the brim with vehicles.

The senior vets, Justine and Kalen were talking to the first ranger. He was gesturing wildly to his truck. Hannah moved closer so she could hear what was going on. This was the most action she’d seen at the camp since she arrived.

There was a whole bunch of them. They don’t appear to be injured but they’re…sick. They didn’t move when we loaded them up. The ranger tapped on the side of his truck. They’re all inside.

How many in total? Justine asked with a grimace.

The ranger shrugged. I don’t know. Maybe a dozen?

"Twelve? Justine’s voice was far higher than it usually was. She glanced at the rest of the vehicle as they lined up. We don’t have the room for twelve panthers."

There’s nobody else around who can treat them. It will take days to get them to the city and we can’t leave our territory. If you don’t take them, they’re going to die out there.

Silence lingered between the pair for a few beats. Justine’s brows were knitted together. It was Kalen who spoke next. They’re all sedated?

The ranger shook his head. No, we didn’t need to. They’re listless. They let us move them without even a growl.

We’ll have to sedate them anyway, Kalen replied. No matter how harmless they might appear, they are still wild animals. I’ll get a team together for the medication. Justine, why don’t you gather a team to unload the animals?

Yeah, okay. We’ll have to treat them out here. They won’t all fit in the surgery tent.

We’ll do what we can, Kalen said.

We’ll help you move them and then we’ll need to be going. We’ve heard a group of elephants are roaming the plains and we want to check on them, the ranger replied.

Kalen gestured to a group of volunteers behind him. All of you, come to the supply tent with me. The rest of you can help Justine move the panthers. Everybody be on high alert. We don’t want any casualties here today. This is our main priority right now. The rest of your tasks can wait for later.

Everyone scrambled to follow orders. Hannah was in Kalen’s group. She followed the senior vet to the supply tent and waited in line to take an armful of equipment and medication.

It was vital they got the animals in a sedated state before they started examining them. It would only take one swat of a paw filled with claws to seriously hurt someone.

And an injured animal was more likely to lash out due to its weakened and pained state of being than a healthy one who could defend itself.

They easily cleared three whole shelves of supplies from the cupboard.

Once they retrieved everything they needed, the group hurried back to the trucks. Justine’s team had already moved three black panthers and they were now lying on the ground.

Hannah was instantly impressed with their size. The big animals sprawled across the grass like extremely large domestic cats would. If they stretched out, they would be twice as big again.

She caught a glimpse of Harry across the way, helping to move one of the panthers. He held a corner of the tarpaulin they were using as a stretcher. Judging from the strain on his face and in the muscles of his arms, she knew they were just as heavy as they
