Crown, Coffee, and Cakes - Carol Cassada
Chapter One
Ducking behind a clothing rack, Amelia snuck a glance back at the window. There they were, a group of twenty photographers waiting for her to exit the building. It never failed. She couldn’t have a relaxing day of shopping without a camera in her face or being peppered with questions.
Yet, as a princess and one day ruler of Wyndomburg, Amelia was a paparazzi target.
I’m sorry your majesty.
The manager approached Amelia. I’ll call the police.
No, don’t.
What was the use? If they were arrested that wouldn’t stop them from hounding her. Plus, Amelia was concerned it’d cause a scandal for her family. I’ve got another plan.
Pulling her cell phone from her purse, she dialed the number. I need your help. Yes. I’ll be waiting.
After hanging up the phone, Amelia followed the manager into a back room. She hoped the photogs didn’t catch on to their plan.
Within ten minutes, the security team arrived.
Thank you for coming.
It’s our job to protect you.
Gus, a burly man, was the head of security. He’d been working with the royal family for over twenty years. Shall we issue the decoy plan.
She nodded.
Gus spoke into his mic and the other guys sent in Sabrina, one of the female guards. Amelia and Sabrina were the same height, but when it came to hair color and facial features; they were different. Amelia’s locks were the color of caramel, while Sabrina was more blonde than brown.
Sabrina was dressed in jeans and a sweater, similar to Amelia’s look. She also wore a ball cap, sunglasses, and a trench coat with the collar pulled up.
Are you ready?
Sabrina asked Amelia.
Yes.
Amelia watched as the other guards escorted Sabrina to the front of the store. Meanwhile, Guss and the other guards snuck Amelia out the back.
Sitting in the back of the SUV, Amelia watched as the vehicle weaved by the store and the paparazzi hounded Sabrina.
THE NEXT MORNING, AMELIA awoke still feeling annoyed about the incident yesterday. As a royal figure, she was always in the news. From the moment she was born, the public was fascinated with her. As the heir to the throne, Amelia caused a stir wherever she went. People wanted photos of her along with tidbits of her life. Why did they care which designer dress she wore or if she preferred ketchup on her fish and chips?
Arising out of bed, Amelia went into the bathroom to wash up. Then she dressed in khaki pants and a pink blouse. Putting on a pair of ankle boots, Amelia made her way down the hall to the dining room.
As she did every morning, Amelia stopped in front of the portrait of her parents. The couple looked elegant in the painting. Samuel was handsome in a tuxedo, while Belinda was the epitome of beauty in a red dress and tiara.
The portrait filled Ameilia with a mix of warmth and sadness. It was a reminder of how happy their family once was before that was taken away from them.
Closing her eyes, Amelia’s mind flashed back to that cold autumn day when she received the tragic news. She’d lost her parents, her grandparents lost their children, and the nation lost their Prince and Princess.
Your majesty.
The sound of Reginald’s voice broke Amelia’s trance, she turned to look at the elderly butler.
Are you all right?
I’m fine, Reginald. Thank you for asking.
