Colorful lights hung from the railings, while inflatable snowmen and reindeer lined the yards. The neighborhood was getting into the spirit of the holidays. Children watched as their fathers climbed ladders to hang lights, anxiously awaiting to see the final results. Cloudy skies loomed overhead with the chance of snow, which had everyone’s excitement level at an all time high. While everyone was prepping for Christmas, there was one person who was waiting for the holiday to be over.
In the middle of the neighborhood was a two-story, brick house. Unlike the other homes, this one was bare from any Christmas decorations. Sitting in his recliner, Gerald looked out the window at the neighbors decorating their yards. The man across the street from him had blue icicle lights strung from the roof, and on the grass was an inflatable penguin popping out of a gift box.
Shaking his head, Gerald pulled down the blinds. He’d had enough of Christmas. He was tired of seeing Santa, reindeer, and snowmen. He hated the sound of Christmas carols. Most of all, he hated the holiday.
It never was this way with Gerald. He used to love the holidays, but all that changed when he lost his beloved Emma. Glancing at the end table, he gazed at the framed photos of him and Emma. There was one of them on their wedding day. The next one showed them and their son Luke, who was now grown with a family of his own. The last photo, the one that was difficult to look at, was of them last Christmas. The couple looked happy as they wore matching red sweaters, yet what they didn’t know is that
