Third Family
Clarise Wilhite and Amanda came through the backdoor of their home. Clarise placed the bags of groceries in her arms onto the kitchen table. Fifteen-year-old Amanda put her bag on the table too. Clarise took a few canned goods from the bags, but Amanda was interested in what she was seeing through the kitchen window instead of the groceries.
Who’s Joey talking to?
Where? I didn’t see Joey. Where is he?
Joey was her twelve year old son.
Amanda leans away from the table, looking out the window. She moved closer to the window for a better view of the situation on the sidewalk.
There’s some old woman out there and he’s talking to her.
Tell him to get in this house. He knows better than to talk to strangers. Do you recognize the woman?
Uh—um—I don’t believe this woman belongs around here. She’s …well…she just doesn’t belong here.
Clarise moved toward the window, but Amanda comment stopped her. She’s leaving.
You still tell Joey to get in this house. Now!
She turned back to her groceries. That boy knows better than that. Go tell him to get in here now!
Yes, ma’am.
Amanda glanced out the window again. I don’t see him either now.
What!
Clarise rushed to the window. Where did he go? Come on.
Clarise headed for the backdoor just as the door opened. Amanda was still at the window.
Whattcha looking at?
Joey asked Amanda.
Amanda whirled around as a small gasp escaped her mouth. Beside Joey stood the woman.
Joey smiled at his mother as he pointed toward the woman. Mom, this is Emily. She’s a street person. That’s what she prefers to be called.
Emily nodded her head, as she stared boldly at Clarise and the food sitting on the kitchen
